The first day of this motorbike tour in Vietnam is a difficult but so exciting start to be out of Hanoi's chaotic traffics and head to the Northwest mountainous region. It’s such a beautiful day to ride through the jungle, cross rivers, and sometimes in the stream bed. After the first hard day, you have a chance to sink in the cool waterfall in National Reserve Park and stay with locals in a stilt house near a dreamlike spring.
As you wake up early in the morning you will be greeted by bubbles of the brook and the sound of birds. Leave your homestay and ride your bikes to pass a 50-kilometer stretch of dirt road, before lunchtime, to reach the Mai Chau valley. Leaving Mai Chau, you will continue riding on the road of the old National Highway No.6, it used to be a northwest main road in the ’80s and has been forgotten for several years. After riding another stretch of 50 kilometers on the dirt road along Da River, you will arrive at your next stop at Moc Chau Plateau and overnight there.
It’s an exciting day waiting for you ahead. After breakfast, you’ll travel around Moc Chau highland to wallow in its beautiful nature. Then get out off the main road, and you will turn off the path, which will make you extremely excited with gravel stone, mud, sheer cliffs, deep abyss, and spring buffalo wallowing in mires along the path. The route will go through Tan Su where the Black H’mong tribe resides. The second day of this motorbike tour in Vietnam will be the time for you to do some exercises and show your riding skill by riding on a 100% off-road. In the evening, you will have a rest in It Ong town after an active day.
Pray to God for the weather to coordinate at least one week before we embark on these roads. With a distance of only 140 kilometers but 90% off-road, today is for sure, a long day and also a real challenge to all riders. All time you have to overcome dangerous long streams, steep slopes, and too-slippery with mud and stone in the jungle. With the great effort of all riders, hopefully, you can reach Mu Cang Chai terraced fields before dark.
After four days of conquering the hard terrain, today will be an easy day for you. You will enjoy driving through the steep and winding roads leading from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa. The path is scenic and you can stop in between to capture some breathtaking shots. After lunch, you will feel the temperature changes suddenly when passing O Qui Ho, the highest pass in Vietnam which connects Lai Chau province and Lao Cai province. Have lunch and feel free to discover Sapa by yourself.
From Sapa, you will ride down to Bac Ha, which is famous for the traditional markets and horse racing arena held annually in the spring. If you come here on the right day, you will be immersed in the colorful highland markets such as the Can Cau market every Saturday and Bac Ha market every Sunday. After having lunch in Bac Ha town, you will ride deep into the remote villages which lie along the boundary, crossing a stretch of dirt and rocky roads and steep hills to reach Xin Man town. Overnight in a small hotel in Xin Man.
A challenging day awaits you today. You will wake up early and enjoy the unique flavor of a highland town that is only separated from China by the Tay Con Linh range, also known as the roof of the northeast. After breakfast, you will start your ride down a challenging and steep road that will take you to the top of Chau Lau Thi, which is covered by fog and cold winds, all through the year. The weather will be warmer when you ride downhill to ride through Suoi Thau and U Bo and then return to provincial road No.178 before riding on Highway No. 2 which leads to Ha Giang city. Overnight in a homestay of the Tay people, about 5km from Ha Giang city.
The day of the winding passes on the rugged mountains is waiting for you ahead. If you love sightseeing tours, it is a great day for this place is considered as the Himalayan range of Northeast Vietnam. However, to discover this land on our Vietnam motorbike tour, especially with all riders, who love adventure, choosing to follow the muddy and slippery road along the border belt is not a bad idea. When you ride on this road, you will see the small houses of the H’mong, Dao, and Lo Lo on the high mountains. Stop to drink a cup of cooking water which is taken from the rare small slit running down from the mountain. The water here is very rare, even with no rain in a year. Someone said that just clinging and surviving on this land can be considered a hero. You will have your own feelings, I bet so.
In the morning, you will take a short walk around Dong Van Ancient Street and Rocky Market to contemplate the old-style architecture here then get a cup of coffee beside that to enjoy the hidden beauty of the little township. Today, still winding roads run along the rocky peaks, but the climate, scenery, and people are changed step by step. From Dong Van, you take a short ride to Meo Vac market via Ma Pi Leng pass where riders can look down on the Nho Que river from an impressive viewpoint called the edge of Tu San abyss. After crossing the Nho Que river at noon on the bamboo raft with capstan, riders will face the ride on a 30 km dirt road beside the river bank to get to the hotel before dark.
Today you will be crossing rivers, passing through villages, and spending time with local communities. You will have lunch at your homestay point before 12:00 noon and will then take a boat for Ba Be Lake in the afternoon. Swimming, rowing, or just relaxing are the best ways to finish this beautiful day. Enjoy the night in a scenic village situated near one of the biggest mountainous lakes in North Vietnam that can make you understand more about the daily life and culture of hill tribes in Vietnam.
The last day of the 11 days motorbike tour in north Vietnam comes, say goodbye to the high mountain land, and you again join the crowd to ride towards the Red River Delta. Soil, dust, noise, and pollution will gradually replace deserted roads and foggy villages. Be careful, your steering wheel is still not familiar with the crowded streets.
Then, it is time to say goodbye.
In some areas of Vietnam, Vietnamese people join traffic with no rules. They can participate in traffic right after drinking beer and wine, use horns loudly to surpass, pass on the right, turn left or right with no turn signals, or ride into the other vehicle lanes.
It is hence recommended to stay safe when riding motorbikes in Vietnam and in addition to learning the basic regulations of the law on road traffic, you also have to know about the traffic habits of Vietnamese people. Please be mindful of keeping right from the traffic, and monitoring the speed at the allowed limits of 40 kilometers per hour in towns and 60 kilometers per hour outside of towns.
It is recommended to use the horn and flash headlights when your view is limited at the corners. Also, use turn signals and also turn your head to look back when you want to change the lane or directions. Be careful when you want to surpass because many people cross the street, change the lane, or directions without any signal, likewise when you ride in the tracks or cross the forests, please be over cautious.
Please remember many local people and their animals have a habit of crossing the road freely and hence caution needs to be exercised at all times.
