It is a difficult but so exciting start from ADV Motorcycle Tours and Dirtbike Travel's office to be out of the chaos of Hanoi traffic and head to Road 32 to discover the Northwest mountainous region. You will ride along the Red river through zigzag roads with many sharp turns and gradients of up to 15%. This distance provides a really nice view of tea plantations and the daily life of the farmers on the beautiful terraced rice fields. In the afternoon, take a first off-road ride through a Hmong village at the top of the mountain with slippery slopes before down to Bac Yen town in the late afternoon.
Today, you should get up early to ride up the top of the mountain called Ta Sua Peak to gaze at the stunning beauty of the sunrise as the sun slowly rises out of the sea of clouds on the mountain halfway. Enjoy a cup of coffee before passing through the rocky slope with one side of a deep valley and a cliff on the other side to reach the next town which is famous for its endless fields to have lunch then heading to Tu Le terraced rice fields on the left of a day ride.
It will be wonderful if after a hard day ride you can have a rest as soaking in the hot water running from the spring with the locals. Soaking together in rivers is a typical cultural characteristic of Black Thai people in the North West and North Centers of Vietnam.
This is an amazing day with more than 40 kilometers off-road along the river. The road will take you through the ancient cinnamon forest and the villages with full of cinnamon bark dried along the street. From here you will have a short ride to the edge of big Lake, also formed by the construction of a hydroelectricity dam in the 1970s. Enjoy your time on a boat or just join the cooking class with your very friendly host. Stay overnight in a local stilt house.
After breakfast, take a boat trip to visit the lake to enjoy the beautiful scenery around the lake, then come back to the homestay to start the ride southeast on Highway 2 and then branch off to the peaceful town of Phu Tho. You follow the edge of the Red River along the dike, almost to the point where it merges with the Black River and then flows together to reach the ocean. By now you are very much in the lowlands of the Red River delta and the north main agricultural area. Crossing the Black River via the bridge, you pass through Son Tay and then return to Hanoi on the highway.
In some areas of Vietnam, Vietnamese people join traffic with no rules. They can participate in traffic right after drinking beer and wine, use horns loudly to surpass, pass on the right, turn left or right with no turn signals, or ride into the other vehicle lanes.
It is hence recommended to stay safe when riding motorbikes in Vietnam and in addition to learning the basic regulations of the law on road traffic, you also have to know about the traffic habits of Vietnamese people. Please be mindful of keeping right from the traffic, and monitoring the speed at the allowed limits of 40 kilometers per hour in towns and 60 kilometers per hour outside of towns.
It is recommended to use the horn and flash headlights when your view is limited at the corners. Also, use turn signals and also turn your head to look back when you want to change the lane or directions.
Be careful when you want to surpass because many people cross the street, change the lane, or directions without any signal, likewise when you ride in the tracks or cross the forests, please be over cautious. Please remember, many local people and their animals have a habit of crossing the road freely and hence caution needs to be exercised at all times.
