It is a difficult but so exciting start to be out of Hanoi's chaotic traffics and head to the Northwest mountainous region. It’s such a beautiful day to ride through the jungle, cross rivers, and sometimes a stream bed. After the first hard day, you have a chance to sink in the cool waterfall in National Reserve Park and stay with locals in a stilt house near a dreamlike spring.
Wake up in the early morning with the babble of the brook and the sound of births everywhere. We will be on the saddle again to pass a 50 km dirt road before lunchtime at the valley Mai Chau where located by White Thai people. Leaving Mai Chau, you will continue riding on the road of the old National Highway No.6, it used to be a North West main road in the ’80s and has been forgotten for several years. After a 50-kilometer dirt road along Da River, the next stop is the Moc Chau plateau, and overnight there.
It’s an exciting day waiting for you ahead. After breakfast, you’ll travel around Moc Chau highland to wallow in its beautiful nature. Then, get out off the main road and you will turn off the track, which will make you extremely excited with gravel stone, mud, sheer cliffs, deep abyss, and spring buffalos wallowing in mires along the path. The route will go through Tan Su where the Black H’mong tribe resides. This day will be the time for you to do some exercises and show your riding skill on an exciting off-road track. In the evening, you will have a rest in Bac Yen town after an active day.
Hopefully, the weather would be nice for at least one week before you embark on these roads. With a distance of only 140 kilometers but 80% off-road, today is for sure, a long day and also a real challenge to all riders. You will pass through the villages of Tay, Thai, and Red Dao with custom features and friendliness and overcome dangerous long streams, steep slopes, and too slippery with mud and stone. You will have a picnic lunch on the way. With a great effort from all riders, hopefully you can reach Bac Yen before dark.
Pray to God for the weather to coordinate at least one week before you embark on these roads. With a distance of only 190 kilometers but 50% of the distance is a dirt road, today is for sure, a long day and also a real challenge to all riders. All time you have to overcome dangerous long streams, steep slopes, and too-slippery with mud, and stone in the jungle. With a great effort from all riders, hope that we will reach Mu Cang Chai terraced fields before dark.
After five days of conquering hard terrain, today will be an easy day for you to recover yourself. The not-long but steep and winding, with exotic natural scene road from Mu Cang Chai to Sapa will stop your wheels at any time for beautiful picture shoots. After lunch, you will feel the temperature changes suddenly when passing O Qui Ho, the highest pass in Vietnam which connects Lai Chau province and Lao Cai province.
Have lunch and feel free to discover Sapa by yourself.
Wake up and enjoy the fresh air of Northwest forest mountain. Say goodbye to the friendly hosts, you ride along the muddy footpath to Pho Lu. After lunch, you continue riding on National Highway No.70 to Thac Ba lake, a beautiful hydroelectric reservoir in the North of Vietnam to enjoy the stunning view of the sunset from the lake. Stay overnight in a homestay.
After breakfast, you will cruise southeast on Highway 2 and then branch off to the peaceful town of Phu Tho. You follow the edge of the Red River along the dike, almost to the point where it merges with the Black River and then flows together to reach the ocean. By now you are very much in the lowlands of the Red River delta and the north main agricultural area. Crossing the Black River via the bridge, you pass through Son Tay and then return to Hanoi on the highway.
In some areas of Vietnam, Vietnamese people join traffic with no rules. They can participate in traffic right after drinking beer and wine, use horns loudly to surpass, pass on the right, turn left or right with no turn signals, or ride into the other vehicle lanes.
It is hence recommended to stay safe when riding motorbikes in Vietnam and in addition to learning the basic regulations of the law on road traffic, you also have to know about the traffic habits of Vietnamese people. Please be mindful of keeping right from the traffic, and monitoring the speed at the allowed limits of 40 kilometers per hour in towns and 60 kilometers per hour outside of towns.
It is recommended to use the horn and flash headlights when your view is limited at the corners. Also, use turn signals and also turn your head to look back when you want to change the lane or directions. Be careful when you want to surpass because many people cross the street, change the lane, or directions without any signal, likewise when you ride in the tracks or cross the forests, please be over cautious.
Please remember many local people and their animals have a habit of crossing the road freely and hence caution needs to be exercised at all times.
