What is Reiki?

Reiki is the art of spiritual healing which has its origin in Japan. The word ‘Reiki’ is made up of two words- ‘Rei’ which means ‘universal life’ and ‘ki’ which means ‘energy’. Reiki is not confined to any particular community or religion and can be practiced by all. Reiki is not a type of massage but a subtle form of energy that works using the spiritually guided life force energy.

Reiki is the ‘life energy’ which flows from all living beings. Reiki practitioners work on the belief that every being has the ability to connect with their healing energy which can be used for strengthening themselves and helping others.

It is believed that an individual’s ‘ki’ i.e. the energy should be free-flowing and strong as it brings a person’s mind and body to a positive state of health. Weak or blocked energy can lead to symptoms of emotional and physical imbalance.

A typical Reiki session helps in easing stress and mental fatigue which supports the body to create an environment for healing on all levels: emotional, physical, and mental. The Reiki session is pleasant and rejuvenating and used for personal wellness.

History of Reiki

Reiki is associated with Mikao Usui, who has the credit of rediscovering the root system which is now known as ‘Reiki’. His preaching and methods were passed on to several generations by the grandmasters of Reiki. Today, Reiki has developed many forms but by far, the Usui system of natural healing remains the widely practiced form of Reiki across the world.

The art of Reiki can’t be acquired by books or journals. The practitioners are trained by a process of initiation wherein the Masters pass on their expertise to their students.

Reiki does not cure any disease but helps the body create a suitable environment that promotes healing. Reiki can work as an effective tool complementing conventional medicine, which is why it is practiced in many medical care settings and hospitals.

How does Reiki feel?

The Reiki treatment feels like a spectacular glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki is used for treating the whole person which consists of emotions, body, mind, and spirit creating several beneficial effects such as relaxation, internal peace, well-being, and a sense of security. Many people vouch for its miraculous results.

Reiki is nothing but a natural and safe method of self-improvement and spiritual healing that can be used by everyone. The treatment also works in conjunction with other departments of medicine or therapeutic techniques which relieves side effects and promotes recovery.

Benefits associated with Reiki

As the Reiki flows through the unhealthy / sick area, it washes away the negative feelings and thoughts lodged in the unconscious body / mind, enabling the healthy flow of ‘ki’ to resume. As a result, the unhealthy organs and tissues get nourished with ‘ki’ and begin functioning properly replacing illness with health.

1) Reduces stress

Reiki helps in the reduction of stress and relaxation of senses which improves health and eliminates the risk of several diseases. Most of the ailments today are linked with stress, be it personal stress, professional stress, or emotional stress.

Excessive or long-term stress can lead to cardiac ailments, gastrointestinal problems, and eating disorders. Stress is also responsible for hormonal imbalance, mood disorders, and depression along with sexual issues and infertility.

2) Reduces anxiety by changing mood

Changes in mood are associated with depression or anxiety. Several studies support the fact that Reiki helps in changing overall mood and eliminates negative thoughts and feelings.

Once your mood is improved, Signs of anxiety and depression also reduce. Reiki also helps in decreasing anger and confusion enhancing positive energy which does not allow you to lose your vigor and enthusiasm for life.

3) Increases mobility

Few studies have established the fact that the effect of physical therapy also known as physiotherapy is the same as that of Reiki in improving the range of motion. Reiki can be used for healing shoulder pain, back pain, wrist pain, and other joint or muscle pains.

4) Heals inflammation and infections

There have been cases of patients with critical infections post-surgery or dangerous diseases that have been successfully healed by the power of Reiki. It helps in reducing the anxiety in a patient which blocks the sense of well-being.

For complete healing, it is essential to develop positive thoughts and a sense of well-being. If used along with conventional medicines and treatments, Reiki can bring amazing results.

5) Metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome, which makes one vulnerable to type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, and chronic conditions, has affected a significant population across the globe. Physical activity is shown to reduce the instances of metabolic syndrome but Reiki too has been proven equally effective in treating the disorder.

6) Treat cancer-associated symptoms

While Reiki in no way can cure dreadful cancer, it certainly helps in treating the symptoms associated with cancer such as pain, depression, and fatigue. After going through all the emotional and physical turmoil, cancer patients feel tired and anxious.

Reiki helps in reducing these symptoms and improves quality of life. Reiki also relieves pain from arthritis, migraine, and sciatica along with reducing symptoms of insomnia, menopause, and asthma.

7) Emotional clarity and spiritual growth

Reiki does not only cure physically but also emotionally. It enhances your ability to love, empathize, and connect with people on deeper levels. It strengthens and heals your personal relationships. Reiki also brings harmony and inner peace which are essential for spiritual growth.

The non-invasive healing technique has gained immense popularity. Since Western medicine is exploring alternative ways of healing, Reiki is sure to get more and more acceptance and value as a natural healing practice.

How to learn Reiki?

The art of ‘Reiki’ is not taught but transferred to the student through Reiki class. The ability is passed on during an ‘attunement’ given by the Reiki master. It allows the student to tap into the unlimited supply of the ‘life force energy’ to improve health and enhance the quality of life.
