On this weeklong culinary adventure in and around the city of Naples, you will be exploring the cuisine and culture of this fascinating city, from the gold gilded to the rough and ready. You will use the city’s famous cooking as a window into daily life and culture, meet artisans who keep the city fed, and visit producers of specialty products. From street food to a lavish feast, piping-hot coffee to smooth aperitivos, folk songs to opera, hilltop farms to urban wilds, you will engage in the greatest culinary and cultural experiences of Naples, meeting lively local Neapolitani for whom this is the only way to live.
This week’s focus on deeply local experiences and places is also reflected in the choice of accommodation. Boutique and independent places are always selected, ones that are inspired by international standards while staying true to the area’s local heritage. This balance is sought not just for a good night’s rest, but for a truly immersive experience.
The group will be staying at Hotel Piazza Bellini, a stunning hotel set in a 16th-century building and former palazzo. The hotel is stylishly decorated, full of pop art design, and conveniently located in the historic Centro Storico.
In the afternoon you’ll gather as a group and familiarize yourselves with the neighborhood, going on a stroll, taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of the city, and capping it all off with a little aperitivo. While enjoying sweeping views of both the city and the bay, and with Vesuvius lurking in the distance, you’ll then walk through the plans for the week before heading to dinner at a cozy local restaurant.
There, you will have their first taste of some of the Neapolitan kitchen’s iconic dishes – an enticing preview of the delicious food to be shared throughout the week.
You will be treated to a deep dive into the city’s cuisine, its markets, and the captivating street life that revolves around them. There will be an opportunity to step into the kitchen and meet local pastry chefs mastering Neapolitan classics, such as the babà au rum and sfogliatella. Later, youwill break bread with a family of bakers who are keeping their third-generation family-run spot alive. Along the way, you will enjoy salt cod and a delicious selection of street food, before visiting a captivating artist’s studio to meet Naples’s last market sign painter.
Along the way, you will have salt cod and street food and you will stop at the studio of the city’s last market sign painter. Tonight, you will be treated to an incredible performance in a private setting in a church with an exclusive wine tasting.
The evening will kick off with a private theatrical performance in a baroque church, where local actors bring Caravaggio’s canvases to life in a surreal spectacle. This will be followed by an intimate wine tasting, hosted by a sommelier, focused on the wines of the Campania region.
After a classic Neapolitan breakfast at the hotel, you will prepare for an excursion to Torre Annunziata, a small town at the foot of Mt. Vesuvius, just forty minutes from central Naples. Known for its proximity to the famous archaeological site of Pompeii, Torre Annunziata attracts history enthusiasts with its lesser-visited archaeological site, Oplontis. Pasta lovers, however, recognize the town as the home of Pastificio Setaro, one of Campania’s legendary pasta producers.
On this day, you will experience the best of both worlds. You will be welcomed onto the production floor of the pasta factory, where vintage machines, lovingly cared for by generations of the Setaro family, transform dough into finished pasta. You will have the opportunity to meet family members, who will share the secrets of their craft and invite them into the vault, where their prized collection of bronze dies is kept safe.
Over lunch in a family-run trattoria, you will prepare for a visit to Oplontis, a "suburb" of Pompeii, where Roman-era villas adorned with frescoes await. A tour of a villa believed to have been the home of Emperor Nero’s second wife will offer a glimpse into the past, followed by the relative tranquility of this magnificent site. Afterward, you will return to Naples for an evening of rest.
On this day, you will explore both the religious practices and superstitions that shape Neapolitan life, beginning with a visit to the Sansevero Chapel. Following that, they will visit shrines and descend into catacombs where human bones are venerated and even "adopted" by locals. Along the way, you will learn about the rituals and beliefs that thrive in these monumental sanctuaries. Lunch will be served at a classic neighborhood trattoria, beloved by locals.
In the evening, you will head out for a hands-on pasta workshop, where they will learn the art of pasta-making, step by step, from a true pastaiolo. Afterward, you will enjoy the fruit of their labor with a delicious pasta dinner.
Located just west of Naples, the Phlegraean Fields are said to be the home of Vulcan, the Roman god of fire: this volcanic zone is a network of crater lakes, ancient waterways, thriving viticulture and seafood farming.
The day will begin in the backroom of a multi-generational coffee roaster, where you will enjoy a freshly brewed cup while learning about the coffee-making process. Next, you will head to a working farm, uniquely housed within a Roman ruin, for a tasting of delicious locally made honey and other products. You will also gain an in-depth view of the area’s rich archaeological legacy, including the cave of mythological significance, once believed to be the site of an ancient priestess of Apollo.
Finally, you will retire to a local winery on the edge of a crater lake, which also houses a destination restaurant. There, you will taste the wines, walk the scenic grounds, and relax while enjoying a feast where the courses never end.
The morning will be spent honoring the craftsmen of Naples. You will visit the workshops and studios of wood carvers, umbrella makers, luthiers, nativity scene artists, and more, in a tribute to the preservation of local heritage and artisans. Along the way, they will also sample some of the city’s best bites in the Spanish Quarter.
In the evening, you will gather for the farewell dinner held in a private home in one of the city’s most iconic buildings. In this noble setting, you'll feast on course after course of Napoli staples accompanied by local wines as musicians of the distinct Neapolitan musical tradition play their favorite songs, celebrating in the Neapolitan way.
On this day, it’s time to part ways! But perhaps there’s still time for a final espresso and sfogliatella before heading home. Until the next adventure!
