Chanya Lodge

Marera Valley Lodge

Located between Karatu Town and Rhotia Village, Marera Valley Lodge is close to the main road to Ngorongoro and Serengeti. Lovely country setting and beautifully landscaped, the lodge offers 19 spacious cottages with views and private decks.

Baghayo Garden

Tanzania Bush Camp

Serengeti is a semi-permanent camp offering wilderness and luxury in Serengeti National Park. The team boasts excellent experiences in both general customer care and hospitality services.

Daily itinerary

Day 1

Whatever your arrival time at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), your safari mate office driver will be waiting for you with a warm welcoming smile and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or office. You will overnight rest at Chanya Lodge or Panama Garden Resort. You will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.

Day 2: Moshi - Londorosi gate - Big Tree Campsite

  • Elevation: 1,200 - 1,950 - 2,850 meters
  • Distance: nine kilometers starting points to Big Tree Campsite
  • Hiking time: three to four hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest

Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate will pick you up from your hotel and transport you to the Londorosi gate for registration. After completing the necessary registration formalities at the Londorossi National Park gate, they drive through varied farmland with open views over the plains to reach the Lemosho trailhead. You have your lunch in the glades before starting to walk. It is an easy day of walking up a small path through the beautiful and lush forest. You will sleep at Big Tree Campsite.

Day 3: Big Tree Campsite - Shira I Campsite

  • Elevation: 2850 - 3500 meters
  • Distance: 13 kilometers
  • Hiking time: six to seven hours
  • Habitat: Moorland and heather land

This is an acclimatization trek because you will gain over 650 meters by starting walking across a beautiful valley outside the Shira caldera rim (3600 meters). After a few hours, you will reach Shira Caldera. A high-altitude desert, Shira is one of the three peaks which erupted in the Kilimanjaro ecosystem. The peak later collapsed and formed a crater which eventually became filled with the lava flow from Kibo Peak. Its rim is eroded and blasted away by weather and volcanic action. Camp and overnight at 3500 meters elevation at Shira I Campsite.

Day 4: Shira I Campsite - Shira II Campsite

  • Elevation: 3500 - 3800 meters
  • Distance: seven kilometers
  • Hiking time: four to five hours
  • Habitat: Moorland and rocky

On this day, you will trek to the east across the Shira plateau visiting (Cathedral peak 3850 meters) for acclimatization. Reaching this peak, you will find spectacular views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak. You then continue trekking to Shira II Camp where you will stay for dinner and overnight place.

Day 5: Shira II Campsite - Barranco Campsite

  • Elevation: 3800 - 3950 meters
  • Distance: 13 kilometers
  • Hiking time: sĩ to seven hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

This is a long acclimatization day. You will have an early breakfast then trek east to a junction leading to Lava tower rock 4600 meters for acclimatization. Afterward, you will descend down to Barranco campsite for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Barranco Campsite - Karanga Campsite

  • Elevation: 3950 - 3900 meters
  • Distance: six kilometers
  • Hiking time: three to four hours
  • Habitat: Moorland

Today is a short day of trekking. In the morning, you will start climbing the Barranco wall and reach 4200 meters for acclimatization and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite for hot lunch. After lunch, you will have a bit of rest and get another acclimatization of trekking up the scree slopes towards the southern ice field. You will then return to the camp for dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Karanga Campsite - Barafu Campsite

  • Elevation: 3900 - 4620 meters
  • Distance: eight kilometers
  • Hiking time: three to four hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Today, the trek up to the Barafu Ridge Campsite is difficult because of the altitude. The walk takes a few hours because of the short distance but is steep which required a slow pace to avoid fatigue. You will walk across an alpine desert with strong, cold winds blowing down from Kibo Peak and its glaciers. You will have an early dinner at 5:00 p.m. and then rest until midnight when you commence your push for the summit.

Day 8: Barafu Hut Campsite - Uhuru Peak - Mweka Hut Campsite

  • Elevation: 4620 - 5895 - 3100 meters
  • Distance: 15 kilometers
  • Hiking time: 10 - 12 hours
  • Habitat: Desert and ice

Wake at midnight to a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Departure for the summit is at 12:00 a.m., switch back up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Stella Point on the crater rim (5,861 meters or 18,640 feet) between 4:00 and 5:00 a.m. At this point, you will be having views of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you.

Then after one hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snow take you to Kilimanjaro's true summit, Uhuru Peak here you will spend time taking photos. After your summit activities, you will descend back to the Barafu Huts campsite for lunch, rest, collect your gear, and continue down through the moorland and heath zone to the Mweka Huts Campsite. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Hut Campsite.

Day 9: Mweka Hut Campsite - Mweka gate

  • Elevation: 3100 - 1700 meters
  • Distance: nine kilometers
  • Descending time: three to four hours
  • Habitat: Montane forest

Today is your last day on the mountain. After breakfast, you will descend down to Mweka Park gate walking across Montane forest. This descent will take three to four hours. At the gate, you will sign out and board the vehicle, ready for the transfer back to your hotel. Dinner and overnight rest at Chanya Lodge or Panama Garden Resort.

Day 10: Moshi or Arusha - Tarangire

Morning head off for Tarangire National Park, where ancient baobab trees tower over some of the largest herds of elephants in all of Africa. Keep a lookout for the hundreds of bird species Tarangire is known for and dramatic interactions between predator and prey at the park’s watering holes. Late evening, you leave the park and drive to Mto wa Mbu near Lake Manyara or Karatu, dinner, and overnight at Marera Valley Lodge or Baghayo Garden.

Day 11: Tarangire - Serengeti National Park

After breakfast, you will set off for Serengeti National Park with a picnic lunch and game drives en route, afternoon game in Serengeti Central Part. Tanzania’s oldest and most popular national park. A UNESCO world heritage site and recently proclaimed the seventh wonder of the world, Serengeti is famed for its annual migration where some six million hooves pound the open plains.

Serengeti offers an exotic game viewing experience in the whole of Africa giving you an up-close look at the animals you have only seen in National Geographic: great herds of buffalo, smaller groups of elephants and giraffes, and thousands of eland, topi, kongoni, impala, and Grant’s gazelle. Dinner and overnight at Tukaone Tented Lodge or Embalakai Tented Lodge.

Day 12: Serengeti

You have another exciting day of exploring the Serengeti National Park. With lunch boxes provided, you continue with game drives throughout the afternoon, scanning the endless plains, spotting many animals and truly realizing just why this national park is so famous. In the late afternoon, you drive back to the lodge tented for dinner and overnight rest. There is an option of doing a hot-air balloon in this area for an additional cost.

Day 13: Serengeti - Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast, you will spend your morning today continuing to explore the central Serengeti plains. Towards the early afternoon, you will start your journey back to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and spend your night inside the conservation area near the crater rim. Dinner and overnight at Rhino Lodge.

Day 14: Ngorongoro Crater or Arusha or Moshi

Today, you descend into Ngorongoro Crater to explore the panoramic, game-rich prairies of this ancient volcanic caldera. Backdropped by crater walls nearly 2,000 feet high, Ngorongoro offers the safari experience of a lifetime in a setting unmatched the world over.

Observe profuse and diverse wildlife roaming freely in an authentic “Lost World,” where it is possible to encounter every member of the big five in a single day. Afternoon, enjoy lunch al fresco in this UNESCO World Heritage Site. After lunch, a short game drive, then you depart the crater and ascend the walls of the Crater, climb up to the rim, and begin your long drive back to Moshi or Arusha to your hotel.

Day 15: Departure

You will be transferred to the Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) to catch your flight back home.

Please book your flight to arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). Transfer from and to the airport is included. Kilimanjaro Trekking Mate will pick you up from the airport. It is usually best to fly into this airport which is only 50 kilometers from Arusha town and 45 kilometers from Moshi. This is the departure point for the majority of safaris. No matter what time your flight arrives, the ride takes about 55 minutes in light traffic.
