Two silver knobs represent the padukas or wooden sandals of the teacher. The walls of the memorial feature framed relief paintings that tell the story of Adi Sankaracharya.

Several large statues of Ganapati, Adi Sankara, and others are also housed in this memorial. Adi Sankara’s shrines in Kalady are open to all pilgrims, irrespective of religion and caste. Visitors can review the life of Sankara Acharya as they climb to the top. The famous Sankara Stupa has eight sides.

Bhoothathankettu is a dam and a tourist spot in Kerala, India. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 kilometers away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 kilometers away from the main city of Kochi. The original natural dam has been supplemented by a modern dam impounding the Bhoothathankettu Reservoir (Thattekad Reservoir). During the Malayatoor pilgrim season, travelers use the roads through the forest.

Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural dam built by superhumans. The name Bhoothathan Kettu, means monster fort. Past generations believed it was built by a Bhootham (monster).

Iringole Kavu Forest Temple

Situated in the tropical rain forest in Pattal near Perumbavoor in Cochin, the Iringole Kavu resides the deity in the form of ‘Vana Durga as the power of the forest. An amazing dense forest surrounded by big trees grabbed the attention of all. It is believed that the power is flanked by numerous gods and goddesses on all sides in the form of thick trees and plants.

The genealogy of the temple dated back to the Dwapara Yuga of Lord Krishna in Hindu mythology. When Kamsa, the uncle of Lord Krishna, tried to kill the little girl child in fury, she glided away and sustained in the air as a powerful radiance. This was called Irrinole, hence came the name for the temple as Irrigole kavu. The deity was in the form of Yaga Nidra, a form of maya (or illusion).

Any person coming here got struck by the rich flora and fauna, including teak, tamarind, mango, pine, monkeys, squirrels, mynah, and rare medicinal plants. The turtles in the nearby lake also draw undivided attention.

Kallil Cave Temple (Jain)

The ancient Kallil cave temple is sited in Methala, a small rural community in Asamannoor Village in Kunnathunadu Thaluk of Ernakulam District in Kerala. The noted towns in the vicinity like Kothamangalam, Perumbavoor, and Muvattupuzha are all at a distance of about 10 kilometers from the temple.

Bhagavathi’s (goddess) shrine or prathishta is in a cave beneath the massive rock that stands sans a support on the ground. This very rock holding onto its position solely owing to Bhagavathi’s grace, which may perhaps be called one of the wonders of the world, is the unique feature of this temple.

This giant of a monolith measuring a whooping 75 feet in length, 45 feet in width, and 25 feet in height, it stands tall as nothing less than an enigma before the keepers of history and the very scientific community. Studies indicate that the inception of the temple might date back to the third century BC. This natural structure situated right in the middle of a jungle as wide as 28 acres is considered one of prime ancient Jain temples in Kerala.

Kaprikadu ecotourism center

Kodanad is on the list of eco-tourism destination projects sponsored by the Government of India. As a part of this project, Kaprikkad, a village lying three kilometers adjacent to Kodanad on the river bank has been set up in 2006 for entertaining visitors in the most natural and environmentally friendly way.

Kodanad Elephant Training Center was a popular attraction on the banks of Periyar in Kerala. Even though it was started as an elephant training center, over a period of time hundreds of animals and birds were brought into this place, and it was developed as a mini-zoo.

As the number of animals significantly increased, animal activists started complaining about keeping such a large number of animals in a small area of 2.5 acres of land in Kodanad. Deers were struggling in a very small fenced area. Elephants had no space to walk around. The objective of Abhayaranyam project is to develop an animal rescue center for the rescue and rehabilitation of wild animals.

Malayattoor Church

Malayattoor is a village in the northeastern corner of Ernakulam district in the state of Kerala in South India. The name ‘Malayattoor’ is an amalgamation of three small words: mala (mountain), arr (river), and more (place). This is to say, Malayattoor is a meeting place of mountains, rivers, and land.

Kurisumudi is a mountain at Maiayattoor 1269 feet above sea level. Kurisumudi has its fame as a place visited by St. Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. Jesus gave a mandate to his apostles to go out to the whole world and to proclaim the good news. Taking upon himself this commandment, Thomas set out to India and landed at Kodungalloor in AD 52.

Thomas spent 20 years in India and traveled through different parts of this great country of spirituality. He founded seven communities of believers which were Kodungailoor, Palayoor, Kottakavu, Kokkamangalam, Chayal, Kollam, and Niranam.

Malayattoor Mala

Kurisumudi (where they found the cross) as is popularly known, is 1269 feet above sea level. Set in serene conditions, one cannot miss the traces of the divine mountain peaks gently caressing the clouds, the shimmering sheen of the Periyar below, the steep cliffs, and the winding roads, all provide an ambiance that is truly heavenly.

Right from the time the golden cross was found, the locals began a practice of lighting an oil lamp and whenever the lamp gave in to the wind, a herd of goats came down wailing and people used to climb the mountain and light the lamp again. Pilgrims who climb the mountain even today carry with them seasamum seeds to feed the goats, even though goats are a rare sight.

Caressed and nourished by the River Periyar which flows between Malayattoor in the north and Paniyeli in the south, the place obtained its name from the routine fight of raftsmen with the wild waves of the river. The river also offers one with a panoramic view of this pristine spot.

Earlier bamboo was cut and tied as logs to form a raft. The raftsmen who carried this bamboo to Malayattoor and other places through the river had to battle the tough waves of the river. The place got its name from poru, the Malayalam word which means fight.

The lush green vegetation around Paniyeli Poru is home to numerous species of birds and animals and assures an exotic experience to all visitors. The chirping and twittering of birds and the melody of rivulets and the waterfalls all blend to compose a harmony that would relieve you from all worries. The sight of River Periyar winding its path along the dense forests and rocks is incredible to watch.

For those who are into photography, Paniyeli Poru is a not-to-be-missed destination. The canopy of trees, warbling birds, and manna will surely tempt you to recapture all the wondrous things in several frames.

Sringeri madam

Kalady, the holy birthplace of Jagadguru Adi Shankara Bhagavadpada, is a beautiful village with rustic simplicity and serenity. It is situated very close to the river of Periyar (Poorna). Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 square kilometers and located about 12 kilometers from Kothamangalam, was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Salim Ali, one of the best-known ornithologist, described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India. Thattekkad literally means flat forest, and the region is an evergreen lowland forest located between the branches of Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.

The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary has a rich and varied birdlife. Several species of birds, both forest birds as well as water birds, visit the sanctuaries, and the important ones include the Indian pitta, which visits the sanctuary during winter and spends almost six months here.
