Hotel Rifugio Prategiano is a small three-star hotel, but its terracotta statues, red marble stone walls, swimming pool with terracotta floor tiles, and porphyry stone-work that can give you a warm and rustic Tuscan agriturismo appeal. Upstairs, there is a spacious lounge with a wood-beam ceiling, fireplace, and windows that show a picturesque view of the mountains.

Moreover, when you sit there, you may smell the delicious meals cooked directly from the nearby kitchen. The smell is so mouthwatering that you will keep wanting to wait by the kitchen door. In addition, below the hotel terrace, not only there are covered and uncovered car parking lots, but there is also a swimming pool, and table tennis area.

You can find Hotel Rifugio Prategiano's horse stables at about 300 meters from the hotel. The hotel and agritourism has 24 rooms, a bar, a restaurant, a small meeting room, and a large living room area with beautiful views. Internet points and a large TV are available free for the guests.

You have a fast Wi-Fi and internet connection is nearly in all places inside and around the hotel. Outside, you will find a small garden perfect for a drink while watching the sunset. On clear days, you will have a wonderful view over Maremma Toscana until the towers of San Gimignano at 55 kilometers away.

Beneath the hotel terrace is a swimming pool, and table tennis area as well as covered and uncovered car parks. The horse stables are about 300 meters from the hotel. Hospitality is fundamental at this quaint hotel. The guests often share similar interests and find socializing and making friends easy.

The hotel rooms

The rooms here have Italian style decoration which is homely and comfy. The facilities are similar to a three-star or bed and breakfast hotel. Each room has a bathroom with shower, telephone, television, security safe, electric kettle, as well as fast Wi-Fi connection. You will find 14 rooms in the hotel's main building and 10 other rooms in the villa by the pool. If you bring a friend or children, you can add a bed or two in some large double or twin rooms in the hotel.

Moreover, some of the smaller rooms have a beautiful panorama over the pool, trail riding center, and Maremma valleys. The main building's bathrooms are special as they are mostly tiled with antique Amalfi hand-painted tiles. A partial restoration has been undergone by Hotel Rifugio Prategiano to conserve these tiles. In addition, the bathrooms of the villa by the pool have also been refurbished recently.

The outdoor swimming pool

The outdoor swimming pool is open from mid-May to mid-September as these times are the months a hotter temperature of the year. The swimming pool sized 18 x 5 meters with sunbeds and umbrellas on the patio by the pool. You can enjoy a refreshing swim, relax, or sunbathe in this unique shaped outdoor swimming pool area.

Hotel Rifugio Prategiano does constant filtering so the water will always be clear. However, as the hotel is situated in the middle of nature, you may find fallen leaves and pollen on the pool sometimes. When you do, please don't make nature touch discourages you to take a fun dip in the swimming pool.

Pet information

Furry guests are just as welcomed as human guests in Hotel Rifugio Prategiano. These furry guests will find the hotel's surrounding to be very friendly for them. If you do bring your four-legged friends, please don't forget to bring him / her blanket or bed as well. By "four-legged" friends, Hotel Rifugio Prategiano doesn't only mean dogs.

You can also request to bring cats and other animals including your own horses. Hotel Rifugio Prategiano can accommodate private horses, sheep, goats, etc. in their stables' horse boxes. So, as you can see, any animals is (nearly) possible to come as part of you. Montieri and the Maremma are the perfect locations for starting your Tuscan bike tour. Cycle tourism does not only mean following the tracks but it is also experiencing the culture, hilly landscapes, panoramic views, wine and food traditions, and all the historic hamlets to visit.

The mild climate and the proximity to the sea make it the perfect setting for many bike tours that are waiting for you. This is the best sports holiday you have ever experienced. On this biking tour, you will use an e-mountain bike or trekking bike and there are several routes that you might want to choose.

Optional route 1: Montieri - Poggio di Prata - Prata - Montieri

You will take the asphalt road to Follonica. Until two kilometers after the crossing Gerfalco, turn left at gravel road (asphalt for 100 meters), bike uphill until trail 30, walk five minutes to the top of the Poggio di Prata (don’t miss this view!), and bike back to gravel road, from Prata to Gabellino (asphalt road 441) and Montieri.

  • Highlights: woods with chestnut and oak trees, incredible view of the Maremma coast until the island of Elba and Corsica, and break in the medieval village of Prata
  • Distances: 31 kilometers / 19 miles
  • Terrain: 23.5 kilometers of asphalt and 7.5 kilometers of gravel road
  • Total elevation: 700 meters
  • Skills and fitness levels: Medium

Optional route 2: Montieri - Travale - Montalcinello - Chiusdino - Ciciano - Montieri

You will bike to Florence, pass Travale and the house of Colli di Travele, turn right after eight and a half kilometers at gravel road indicator “ERGA”, follow indicator of the Enel perforations “Radicondoli 7” and “Chiudino 1”, straight ahead, surround to the turn left wooden gate, a kilometer dirt road to arrive at Monalcinello, then take asphalt road to Chiusdino, Ciciano, Montieri.

  • Highlights: Lagoni geothermal area, nice gravel road along a ridge, stop in the village Montalcinello, and a visit to Chiusdino
  • Distances: 33 kilometers / 21 miles
  • Terrain: 28 kilometers of asphalt, four kilometers of gravel road, and a kilometer of dirt road)
  • Total elevation: 800 meters

Optional route 3: Montieri - Gerfalco - Galleraie - Travale

You will take the asphalt road to Gerfalco, turn left at gravel road number 12 to Canaluzzo, and turn right at gravel road number 23 downhill. After Casa Nuova, you turn left and follow the main gravel road until the house of Boscaglia, then continue from Fountain main gravel road right downhill to Bagni della Galleraie, uphill asphalt road to the main road direction Travale / Montieri.

  • Highlights: a visit to the top hill village of Gerfalco, nice gravel road through the Le Cornate natural park with impressive views, old restored farmhouses, springs with crystal water, and picnic at Galleraie
  • Distances: 28 kilometers / 17 miles
  • Terrain: 16.5 kilometers of asphalt and 11.5 kilometers of gravel road
  • Total elevation: 750 meters
  • Skills and fitness levels: Medium

Optional route 4: Montieri - River Merse - San Galgano

  • Highlights: monastery of San Galgano, an antique trail called Strada della Maremma with several ruins of former posting-houses, view to the Luriano castle, and picnic at the Merse River
  • Total length: 42 kilometers / 26 miles
  • Terrain: 9 kilometers of asphalt, 16 kilometers of gravel road, and 17 kilometers of trails
  • Total elevation: 950 meters

Optional route 5: Montieri - Poggio di Prata - Prata

You will bike uphill in front of the hotel, take trail 14 to your right, continue straight ahead to house Follavento, turn left there, left at the gravel road, take the trail to the right before the gravel road turns left. You will arrive at trail 30, bike straight ahead, turn right uphill, a small trail to your left uphill to the top of the Poggio di Prata (do not miss this view although you will have to push the MTB).

You will bike back to the meadow the same way, turn right, then turn left to arrive at Casa Rosa (picnic place and fountain). Afterward, you will bike downhill to Prata, turn right on the square, follow the asphalt road until 200 meters after crossing Niccioletta, then turn right uphill on a gravel road, right at asphalt road direction Montieri

  • Highlights: woods with chestnut and oak trees, fantastic view of the Maremma coast until the island of Elba and Corsica, break in the medieval village of Prata or at the picnic place
  • Distances: 26 kilometers / 16 miles
  • Terrain: 8 kilometers of asphalt, 10 kilometers of gravel road, and 8 kilometers of trails)
  • Total elevation: 800 meters

Optional route 6: Montieri - Gerfalco - Galleraie - Travale

You will take trail 14 always straight ahead until house Folavento, turn right at the house, turn right at the gravel road, asphalt road to Gerfalco, then turn left at gravel road number 12 to Canaluzzo, and turn right at gravel road number 23 downhill.

After Casa Nuova, you turn left, follow the main gravel road until the house of Boscaglia then continue from fountain main gravel road right downhill to Bagni della Galleraie, uphill asphalt road to main road direction Travale / Montieri, and bike back on trail 24 or asphalt road.

During this holiday, you will be served daily breakfast in continental style buffet with coffee, bread, yogurt, cheese, meat, cereal, pastries, and more. The restaurant of the hotel is composed of two rooms, one light room with panoramic windows and one rustic room. In summer, you can have breakfast, lunch, and dinner on the terrace at an additional cost. The restaurant serves Tuscan style food which is based on simple and traditional ingredients. You can try typical dishes with some famous local red or white wine.

Some of Hotel Rifugio Prategiano's specialities include ribollita (Tuscan soup with beans, cabbage, and bread), pici al ragu (thick pasta with meat sauce), gnudi con burro e salvia (dumplings with butter and sage), pappardelle al capriolo (pasta with a deer meat sauce), risotto porri e noci (risotto with leeks and walnuts), tortelli maremmani (tortelloni with spinach, butter, and sage), vellutata di ceci e funghi (creamy chickpea soup with wild porcini mushrooms), brasato al vino rosso (braised meat in red wine sauce), cinghiale in umido (wild steamed boar meat), tagliata con rucola e grana (sliced filet with arugala salad and grated cheese), bistecca fiorentina (thick steak), etc.

The dinner in the restaurant is a three-course meal in which you may choose from two dishes for each course, one of which is vegetarian. You may also choose a la carte dishes. With half-board bookings, you may either dine in the restaurant or, for lunch, you may join outdoor lunch trips. These full course picnics are held in scenic locations and include all of the offerings of a restaurant meal including coffee and wine.
