  • The first night you sleep in an ecological house in the town of Pispitayoc in the middle of the high jungle.
  • The second night you sleep in the town of Santa Teresa. Comfortable accommodation: 2 beds or triple or double, private bathroom, hot shower.

The Inca Jungle unlike other treks, is not so demanding. It offers accommodations in hostels and is geared to travelers of any age and physical condition with a spirit of adventure. If you are up for it, you can complete this amazing experience by adding extra multi-adventure activities such as rafting and zipline.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco - Ollantaytambo - Pass Malaga - Huamanmarka - Santa Maria - Pispitayoc

  • Cycling distance: 50 km – 31 mi.
  • Walking distance: 3 km – 1.82 mi.
  • Duration: 3 hours + 30 min.
  • Maximum elevation: 4316m. – 14160ft.
  • Mínimum elevation: 1600m. – 5248ft.
  • Lodging: Pispitayoc

You will begin the Inca Jungle trail at 6:00 a.m. with a pick-up from your hotel. On your way out, you will pass by the towns of Chinchero, Urubamba, and Ollantaytambo, all belonging to the Sacred Valley. The adventure begins at Abra Málaga's (4,316m – 14,160ft.) high pass, with its impressive view of the snow-capped mountain Huacay Willca, from here you will receive your biking equipment, bicycles, and safety speech.

Then you will begin the bike descent, crossing different ecological zones such as Puna (Highland) and Cloud Forest, both having a huge range of flora and fauna. After 3 hours (50 km – 80 mi) of biking downhill, you will finish the bike journey at the archaeological remains of Huaman Marq’a (1600 m – 5248 ft). Here, you will take the van again and drive 25 minutes to the town of Santa Maria (1,200 m – 3,937 ft.) then you will continue walking 25 minutes to Pispitayoc (1370 m – 4493 ft.) village to a local house that is located in the middle of the mountain and forest. You will spend the night in the eco house and have dinner.

To keep in mind

  • For downhill biking, you don’t need experience, you just need to know how to ride the bike, it’s 90% downhill and 10% flat.
  • Optional: This day after lunch you will have the opportunity to go river rafting on the Urubamba River this has a cost of 30 USD per person.

Day 2: Pispitayoc – Qellomayo – Cocalmayo – Santa Teresa

  • Walking distance: 15 km – 9.3 ml.
  • Duration: 7 hours
  • Maximum elevation: 1750m. – 5740ft.
  • Mínimum elevation: 1200m. – 3936ft.
  • Lodging: Santa Teresa

After a delicious breakfast, the guide will explain to you about the place and will teach you how to roast and make your own coffee. After that, you will begin hiking by part of the Inca Trail network known as the Qhapaq Ñan. Along the way, you will see numerous birds, including parrots, hummingbirds, and eagles, and also plantations of coca (the Sacred Leaf of the Incas), coffee, yucca, and fruit trees (orange, mango, and banana).

You will walk until Huancarcasa (1750 m. – 5750 ft.) viewpoint and relax there with the panoramic view of the all valley, after this break, the trail descends to the small village of Qellomayo (1200 m. – 3936 tt.). You will have lunch here and then begin the last part of the trek, approximately 2 more hours. You end up in the thermal baths of Cocalmayo (1450 m. – 4756 ft.) (optional) and afterward, reach the town of Santa Teresa (1515 m. – 4969 ft.). Overnight, dinner, and breakfast on the next day.

To keep in mind

  • Before reaching the thermal baths of Cocalmayo, you cross a small local cable car (oroya) owned by the community and it is necessary to pay 10 soles per person.
  • The visit to the thermal baths is optional and the ticket cost is 10 soles per person.

Day 3: Santa Teresa – Hidroeléctrica – Aguas Calientes

  • Walking distance: 10 km. – 6.21 ml. + 12 km. – 7.4 ml.
  • Duration: 7 hours
  • Maximum elevation: 1950m. – 6396ft.
  • Mínimum elevation: 1515m. – 4969ft.
  • Lodging: Machu Picchu town

After an energetic breakfast, you will continue in the footsteps of the Inca ancestors. You will walk the first 3 hours from Santa Teresa (1515 m./ 4969 ft.). On the way, you will see coffee and coca plantations. You end up at the Hidroeléctrica (1900 m / 6,270 ft), where you’ll have lunch and a break. Then, continue for 3 hours along the train track to reach the Aguas Calientes (1950 m./ 6396 ft.) or Machu Picchu town. You will have the afternoon free. Come night, you will gather for dinner and plan the climb to Machu Picchu on the next day.

To keep in mind

  • This day in the morning you can do the zipline activity that is very fun and has more than 5 cables and doing it has a cost of 30 USD per person (optional).
  • At dinner, the guide will give each one their income to Machu Picchu and return train tickets and will coordinate the trek to Machu Picchu for the next day and confirm the departure time.

Day 4: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

  • Walking distance: 6 km.
  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Maximum elevation: 2400m. – 7872 ft.
  • Minimum elevation: 1950m. – 6396ft.
  • Train return: 1 hour 45 minutes.
  • Van return: 1 hour 30 minutes.

At 4 a.m., you will start your last day, walking up to Machu Picchu (2400 m./7872 ft.) for around 1 hour and a half. At the entrance of this Inca citadel, you will register and show your ticket. Enjoy a 2-hour guided tour in which the guide will show you the most important parts of Machu Picchu citadel. After the guided visit, you will have free time to explore by yourselves. At the end, you will return to Aguas Calientes (1950 m./ 6396 ft.) aka Machu Picchu town, pick up your stuff, and go to the train station to take the train to Ollantaytambo, where a bus awaits to return you to Cusco. End of service.

To keep in mind

  • To go down from Machu Picchu to the town you can do it by walking for 1 hour and 30 minutes or take the bus down 25 minutes, it costs 12 USD
  • In Ollantaytambo, the driver will wait for you with a sign with your name and he will transport you to Cusco

Do you need good physical condition for the tour?

It is recommended to be suitable for hiking for more than 6 continuous hours, also having practice in handling bikes (downhill) is the minimum recommended. In case you do not have experience handling a bike you can coordinate with the guide to avoid this sport and can accompany the group from the bus accompanying the first tranche. You can also request bicycling only the last part of the route (safer).

Are there restrooms along the trek?

In each camping site are toilets that are free and also along the way are some, especially in the lunch points and some rest points but are not free the cost is 1 or 2 soles, important each traveler has to carry their own personal hygiene products, including toilet paper.
