This tour starts and ends in Rome. During the tour, you will visit several places of Italy including Latium, Rieti, Apennine Mountains, Loreto Aprutino, Sulmona, Caserta, Mediterranean coast, Naples, Salerno, Amalfi Coast, and Terracina.
Many people know nothing about Lazio except its main city, Rome, the most visited destination in Italy for pedestrian tourists. Yet Lazio has a strong identity that goes far beyond its capital. It is an ancient and bewitching land rich in tradition, the authentic nursery of Italian roots where the Etruscan, Roman, and Catholic civilizations arose.
A treasure trove of artworks and architectural gems, the whole region offers many and varied glimpses of the past, of inestimable beauty and appeal Roman remains, castles, crypts, and monasteries with such a choice that deciding what to see can be a real headache.
All this is against an impressive backdrop of majestic parks and lakes such as Nemi, Bolsena, and Bracciano. Lazio is still sprinkled with gorgeous noble villas, many now converted into first-class hotels, often nestling amid vineyards that offer visitors white wines as refreshing and cheerful as the region’s people.
The Abruzzi region, also known as the green land of Europe because of its many parks, protected areas, and natural reserves, features the highest peaks of the Apennine Mountains. Its highest summit, called the Corno Grande, belongs to the Gran Sasso massif, very similar to the Alps, and peaks at 2,912 meters.
The Majella massif, south from the Gran Sasso, features the second highest peak, the Mount Amaro with 2,795 meters of height. Gran Sasso and Majella also lend their names to two national parks, while Abruzzi’s territory also includes the Sirente Velino regional park and part of the national park of Abruzzi, Latium, and Molise.
Actually, Abruzzi is Italy’s leading region for environmental conservation. Yet, despite the majesty of its landscapes, the beauty of its many birds perched at top of steep cliffs, and the enchanting atmosphere of such fine towns as L’Aquila and Sulmona, Abruzzi is still barely touched by mass tourism.
As regards Umbria, the land of St Francis and St Claire, it exudes spirituality and is still an ideal environment for seekers of tranquility and meditative moods. The region is covered with swathes of dense woodland and expanses of vines and olive trees.
This is a land of strong flavors. Wines, oils, truffles, charcuterie, and all of the supreme quality create extraordinary dishes wreathed in aromas, fragrances, and personality that permeate your tour amid the natural beauty of the Apennine Mountains and the Monti Sibillini.
You counterpoint all this with visits to the ancient papal seats and Franciscan sites in Umbria, gliding through historic centers steeped in otherworldly charms, like the magnificent towns of Orvieto and Assisi.
Not forgetting the gorgeous serpentine roads that lead you to the splendid monasteries and hermitages that arose in the heart of these mountains at the start of the middle ages. There will be Campania, a very peculiar, messed-up region with a strong identity, incomparable to any other place in Italy, that you will fall in love with or definitely hate but can no way remain indifferent to.
Out of your itinerary but liable to be visited individually on the rest day, Naples, the city most often depicted in the classic Italian post-war cinema with its chaos, theatricality, immense contrasts, and its inhabitants’ unique characterization is probably the Italian town that foreigners know best, even if they have never set foot in the country.
Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi, Pompei, Herculaneum (Ercolano), the Vesuvius are names everyone has heard and dreamt of and you’ll be there!
You will enjoy 12 buffet breakfasts at your hotels, 3 lunches at typical restaurants, and 9 dinners at your hotels or external restaurants. All meals are chosen à la carte by the customer, no fixed menu.
