This motorbike tour in Nepal is designed to showcase the history of this enigmatic country and the varied landscapes that constitute the Himalayas. You will ride along fierce rivers, through narrow gorges, ancient forests, the Himalayan lowlands, and the middle Himalayas. On clear days, the views of the giants are a constant backdrop that only elevates the sense of adventure.
You will stay for eight nights in various accommodations including hotels and tents. The start of the trip sets the tone for the rest of the journey and the end of the trip is an intimate moment to reflect, relish, and basically have one big party. The properties Karma Yatri uses at various locations, that serve as start and end points of the itinerary, are unique and carefully selected.
The properties combine the best in hospitality that the region has to offer, great food, and the ability for you all to behave like a group. Please note that although Karma Yatri provides blankets and duvets, it is recommended that you carry a sleeping bag for added comfort.
Fly into Kathmandu airport. Apply for Visa on arrival (ensure that you are carrying appx 50USD in small notes). Taxi transfer to hotel. Meet & greet the extended group and a short orientation ride (if time permits). Sightseeing – This Himalayan city has the highest concentration of UNESCO heritage monuments. Welcome dinner and ride briefing.
We leave the bustling city of Kathmandu, befuddled by the sheer volume of traffic and the #methodinthemadness that makes Nepal tick. This is the most densely populated part of the Himalayas and there is an irony that's unmistakable. You are surrounded by the highest mountain peaks in the world, travelling along one of the youngest geographical features of our world- through a cultural Diaspora spanning more than two millennia. We ride towards Nagarkot and notice the quick transition of weather, riding conditions and reduced traffic, which will define the bulk of our ride, as we seek small roads that cut across the rolling hills of Nepal, showcasing its diverse landscape and small village communities. We bypass the city of Kathmandu and ride along beautiful tarmac roads before diverting off the main track, towards our lakeside hotel.
The ride today may be your best chance to see the high mountain peaks that are located in the Everest cluster. We pray for clear skies and good visibility. We continue riding on small narrow roads that snake down the mountains, towards the lowland regions of Nepal that are characterized by dense forests teeming with wildlife and huge tracts of land that are under paddy cultivation- the Terai is a sight to behold. We are riding towards the first National Park of Nepal, a place that has become synonymous with the Asiatic Rhino and a showcase for the spectacular efforts at conservation. We have the option for an evening/morning safari or both (based on your mood).
We continue riding along the flatlands that border India as we trace a bumpy (road construction works) path towards the birthplace of Buddha. The road to Nirvana is never easy. After some sightseeing at Lumbini we break for lunch, before we leave the busy flatland city of Butwal and head back into the mountains. The road climbs quite quickly and the temperatures dip as we ascend to yet another cultural hotspot of Nepal. Tansen is dotted with houses that retain old Newari architecture and is famous for its metal work artists.
This is probably the highlight of our Nepal tour because today is packed with everything you have dreamt about for your Nepal adventure and probably a lot more. We ride on roads that are in the midst of construction or roads that have been forgotten. Pot-holes, mud trails, river crossings, suspension brides- there is a little bit of everything. Steep ascends on remote tracks and postcard perfect villages in impossible settings, there is drama on every bend of this circuit. Its our longest day on the road and possibly our most rewarding. A truly Himalayan welcome to the magical kingdom of Nepal.
Today's ride can be as easy or complicated as you wish. We have the option of making a short trip to our next destination at Pokhara and enjoy the charms of this laid back lakeside city and adventure capital of Nepal. Alternatively we can venture towards the fabled lands of Mustang valley. It’s a protected region and we need special permissions/permits to explore this region fully, but this brief 100 KM detour could showcase some stunning scenery (including views of the giants in the Annapurna mountain peak cluster) and open up some interesting off-road trails.
We make a leisurely exit from Pokhara as today is a relatively short ride. We are back onto bumpy highways that are in the middle of construction. So please expect to get caked in dust/mud. We do have some detour options which could give us a brief insight into the region of Manang ( yet another high altitude region of Nepal) but chances are that we would ride directly to the picture perfect village of Bandipur and opt for short walks through the village and admiring the countryside.
Our final riding day is a mixture of emotions, in many different ways. We continue riding on the Kathmandu highway, braving traffic, potholes, dust , tourists but it all goes by in a blur as we reminisce the week gone by. This journey is just a small slice of this magical kingdom, but we hope it gives you an insight into the culture, the people and the geography that is so intrinsic to the life of the inhabitants of this mountain kingdom.
This day marks the end of your adventure. Get ready to depart Kathmandu.
We have several excursions to choose from, some which are part of our journey and some that are optional activities.
Two decades of motorcycling and the opportunity to live in many parts of India and Europe. A passion that keeps growing with every riding season. New roads to discover, more friends to ride with is his mantra. He speaks Hindi, Kashmiri, Tamil, English, German, French and a smattering of other Indian dialects. A native of Kashmir means that a vast network that can be called upon in case of any emergency or contingencies.
Everyone has heard of Nepal. Home to the (real) Mount Everest and to the (fabled) Yeti, this Himalayan kingdom has ,from time immemorial, sparked the imagination of adventurers and seekers. Home to 7 of the 10 highest peaks in the world, this is an ancient cultural heritage, in the heart of the youngest mountains in the world- straddling a fine line between modernity and primordial.
