Background of Poldark

Winston Graham wrote 12 Poldark novels in all over a period of 57 years. He moved to Perranporth from Manchester with his family in 1925 when he was 17. The 1970's saw the BBC producing costume drama from the first seven of the Poldark novels and they were a huge success. In 2014, the BBC produced the first series of a new dramatization of the books - with even more acclaim. The filming of the third series was completed in September 2016. The 1970's Poldark was filmed partly in Cornwall but a lot of it was filmed outside the Dutchy. The vast majority of the later Poladark was filmed at various locations in Cornwall.

Winston Graham lived in Perranporth until 1959, eventually settling in East Sussex. He returned to Cornwall on regular family holidays staying at the Crantock Bay Hotel, West Pentire.

Levant Mine

Botallack appeared in the 1970's Poldark and in the current series is used as the Grambler Mine and Wheal Leisure. Levantine's exterior doubles as Tressider Rolling Mill. Geevor is mentioned in various Poldark books and is now open as a museum.

Holywell Bay

A very bay with the imposing gull rock jus offshore, this bay is owned by the Warleggans, Ross Poldark's arch enemies.

Kynance Cove

A beautiful bay with white sand, Kynance is used for Nampara cove.

Caerhays Castle

An unusual feature of the books, a fictional member of a real family was a character in two Poldark novels "The Twisted Sword" and "Stranger from the Sea". The character's name was Cuby Trevanion and Caerhays Castle used to be the ancestral home of the Trevanion family. It now belongs to the Williams family. The estate dates back to the 13th century. The present castle, although designed to appear Norman, was in fact built at the beginning of the 19th century.

Tehidy House

It's used for a lot of location shooting - both grounds and house. The estate used to belong to the Bassett family but now belongs to Cornwall County Council. At one time, the house was a TB hospital but has now been converted into private apartments. Nearby Illogan village is where Demelza was born.

St. Agnes Head

It has a sweeping valley which is used for scenes of the fields outside Nampara. It will also feature largely in series three for clifftop scenes.

Gunwalloe Church Cove

The night wreck of Queen Charlotte was filmed here.

Village of St. Breward

A small village on the west of Bodmin Moor which has stayed largely unchanged since the heyday of tin and copper mining. This made it an ideal location for the exterior of Ross Poldark's house, Nampara, and also a number of miners' cottages.

Used for location shooting, Tregothan's main claim to fame is being the UK's first tea plantation!

Charlestown Harbour (where Poldark is filmed)

Just outside St. Austell is the working harbour of Charlestown which doubles regularly as the maritime ports of Falmouth and Truro.

The Minions

Near to the stone circles that make up The Minions is the crossroads featured in the opening scenes of the first episode of the later series, where Ross Poldark dismounts the carriage on his way home from the American War of Independence.

Porthgwarra Cove

It is used for that swimming scene. It is also used for the scenes of gathering in the pilchards.
