Everest Base Camp is the most popular tea houses trek in the Khumbu region. On the trek, you will stay at the basic hotel known as a tea house/guest house/lodge. The accommodation in the hotel is comfortable with a net and clean bed, a warm blanket, pillow, and a shared bathroom and shower. Mostly, the bedrooms in the tea house are double beds or twin and a triple bedroom with good mountains view from the window, so you will stay with your friends sharing a bedroom.

A support team from Nepal Mother House will wait for you at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM),. You meet the team and transfer to the hotel, as per the reservation by email. Then, you meet either at their office or at your hotel for the trekking preparation and permit work, requires 3 PP size pictures, and a passport copy. Make sure your insurance details cover the Everest Base Camp Trek and have a copy of your travel insurance policy with you and provide a copy as well.
Day 1 trip highlight
A guide comes to your hotel according to your flight seclude to the Lukla. For your reference, Lukla is located lap of the Himalayan; the weather here is unpredictable, it might-be quick change after mid-day, so most of the flights operated early in the morning on favorable weather. It will be a 25 to 30 minutes exciting scenic flight to the Tenzing Hillary Airport Lukla, where you will meet another crew waiting for the voyage.
The snow-capped mountain views, including Karyolung (6,511 meters), Khatang (6,853 meters), Numbur/Shorong Yul Lha (6,959 meters), and Kongde Shar (6,093 meters) can be seen from Lukla. This is the first day of your journey; the day begins at Lukla, and passes several hotels, shops, and houses that represent Sherpa culture toward the north of town.
The trails drop down through the pine and Rhododendron forest above the Chaurikharka Village, after the exit from Pasang Lhamu Gate, the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest in 1993. The wider trail goes through the Sherpa settlements Thalshora, Chheplung, where can see Samdenling Gomba attached to the rock above the trail and cross the apple orchard established by the Japanese towards Ghat (2,492 meters) Village via Thado Khola wondering view of Mt. Kusum Kanguru (6,367 meters).
Now the trail rise to the holy place Nurling, Buddhist carving rocks, Mane whiles and Chorten until the top of the hill and descending nearby Dhudhakoshi River Bank and extend to the Phakding. It takes a 2 to 3 hours pleasant hike, rest of the day you may wander around the village or side trip to Pema Choling Monastery above on the wooded hillside 20 to 30 minutes. Stay overnight at the lodge.
Day 2 trip highlight
Note: Nowadays, there is no available direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla during the trekking high season (spring and autumn) due to heavy air traffic at Kathmandu Airport. So, you need to fly Ramechhap to Lukla after 4 to 5 hours of overland transport from Kathmandu, 132 kilometers.
You proceed to the Namche Bazaar cross the bridge and upward along the Dudh Koshi River (milky River) banks through the Tok-Tok Village great view of Mt. Thamserku (6,608 meters) far ahead and get in Bankar Village within one and half-hour effort, where you will cross the beautiful waterfall. After a short walk, cross the same river by Swing Bridge to the east (left side) of River Bank and ascend through the hamlet of Chhumowa and continue uphill to the Manjo (2,835 meters) after crossing the Kyangsar Khola.
At the north end of the village, you will reach Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park office, where you obtain a permit if not brought from Kathmandu, and then the bottleneck trail descends to the river and you cross another suspension bridge before getting in Jorsale (2,740 meters). This is the last village before Namche Bazaar, so batter to taking lunch here and fills up your water bottle.
Today it is an interesting walk while crossing the same river five times. The trail follows the west bank of the river from Jorsale through the pine forest and again crosses the bridge and walk along the east (left) side of the river bank.
The trail upwards to the river bank with some steep up the trail to the confluence of Dudh Koshi from the east and west bank of Bhote Koshi and spans the canyon on a thrillingly high, hanging bridge, fifth bridge. About 45 minutes winding ascend at the crest of a prow, an inspiring glimpse of Mt. Everest permitted during clear weather. The trail continues through the pine forest to a police check post and several lodges at Namche Bazaar. It takes 2 to 3 hours from Jorsale.
For the rest of the day, you may walk around the area. Stay overnight in Namche Bazaar and witness snowcapped mountains including Thamserku (6,608 meters) and Sherpa Heritage.
Day 3 trip highlight
Today is a rest day for acclimatizing and restoring energy before heading Everest Base Camp. Namche is located in front of the wonderful Mt. Kongde (6,186 meters), in the corner of the huge forest. It is a business transit point between Nepal and Tibet from ancient times. If you get to Namche Bazaar on Saturday, you can observe the weekly Saturday market with a barter system at the southern end of the town.
Namche is a trekker’s paradise, and it is a worthwhile place to explore and relax. After a late breakfast in a wonderful view of Kongde in the west and east Mt. Thamserku and Kangtegha, you walk around the Manche Bazaar and then hike up to the Everest View Hotel, a crest of the ridge above 2 hours walk, operated by Japanese. It is the best place to visit for the view of the incredible mountains including the top of the world; Mt. Everest (8,848 meters), Nupste (7,961 meters), Ama Dablam (6,856 meters), Kangtegha (6,685 meters), Thamserku (6,608 meters), Kusum Khanguru (6,367 meters), Khongde (6,186 meters) and Khumbi Yu La (5,761 meters), etc.
The trail separated from the top of the village at North-East nearby Sherpa Museum and ascends along the ridge above with spectacular mountains scenery, amazing landscape through the subtropical alpine vegetation to the Syangbuche Airport and Hotel Panorama. Capture some sight in your camera from Everest View Hotel, then you descend through the pine forest to the Khumjung valley, where the view of sacred peak Khumbila (aka Khumbi-Yul-Lha) immediate north of the valley, as the protected deity of Khumbu, a school built by Sir. Edmund Hillary, an ancient Monastery with a yeti skull, and Khunde Hospital, and the same color (green) pattern houses add perfume in the gold.
Then, you walk along the way, about 15 minutes climb Khunjung to the south will bring you to the Hillary Memorial Stupa built in honor of Sir Edmond, a man beloved by the local Sherpa community, especially for his mission to let the education, health care and air transportation in the locality. You return back to Namche for the overnight stay. If you have time and are willing to explore more sites, you may visit the mountaineering museum, the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee (SPCC), Sagarmatha National Park Head Office (8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. except for Saturdays and government holidays), and monastery, etc.
Day 4 trip highlight
From Namche, the trail ascends to the top of the town to the northeast, where a huge boulder with eye-catching Buddhist Mani prayer inscriptions is located. From there, the trail goes high above the Dudh Koshi River on a wide track with wonderful mountains view and amazing valley landscape little ups and mostly down to the Kyanjuma taking an hour from Namche. Mountains including Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Khangtekha, Lhoste are standing in front of you with their tremendous shape.
In about five minutes walk through the Rhododendron forest, you will get a junction of Khumjung, Gokyo, and Tengboche trail with signboard, more tea houses area here, this is most probability spot encounter Himalayan Goats and musk deer. Then the trail descending about a half-hour to the Punge Thagna, at the Bank of Dudh Koshi River it takes about two and half-hour from Namche bazaar to get in. If you start the trip bit late hour then, this is the best place to have lunch as the last tea house before Tengboche.
Then the trail ascends through the forested crest of the ridge to the hill at Tengboche monastery (3,867 meters), one of the biggest monasteries in the region. This is a wonderful place with the jaw-dropping view including top of the World “Everest (8,848 meters), Kongde (6,186 meters), Tabuche (6,367 meters), Nuptse (7,861 meters), Lhotse (8,516 meters), Ama Dablam (6,856 meters), Kantega (6,685 meters) and Thamserku (6,608 meters), etc. and sacred place of the monastery.
Ama Dablam most ample view in attractive shape in closet distances. There is a praying ceremony each morning and evening in the monastery, you may participate in this soul recharging vibe. The monastery has been renovating times again (1934 collapsed by an earthquake, 1989 burnt by an electric fire, hence the hydroelectricity was established in 1988) after being established in 1916 by Gulu Lama Nyingma tradition.
In front of the Monastery entrance, can be seen a footprint on the stone, the locals believe that is Lama Sangwa Dorje’s footprint from the 17th century while establishing Buddhism in the region. The view from Tengboche is amazing whole in the day but the sunrise and sunset views changing color on the mountain are breathtaking. This is the best place to do a day hike to the Hamugon Peak (4,560 meters), if you have a longer holiday in Nepal. Stay overnight at a tea house in Tengboche.
Day 5 trip highlight
The day trip commences after breakfast at the same tea house where you are staying, from Tengboche the trailheads to the east and slightly descends down for 20 minutes through the rhododendron with charming moss-festooned forest to Deboche (3,820 meters). This is an alternative place to staying overnight while overbooked hotels at Tengboche during the peak season.
The trail goes up above the Imja Khola through the jungle, where most provability to encounter wildlife such as panda and musk deer. The walk continues the same vegetation further to the Ani Gomba (nunnery monastery) and a small settlement at Milinggo in 15 minutes further walk. Then, cross the steel bridge over the raging Imja Khola River with dazzling views of Ama Dablam towering to the east. Now, the trail ascends toward the Panboche (3,930 meters) village en route Chorten and Stupa.
The upper trail leads to the Pangboche Gumba at the upper settlement of Pangboche, and it is one of the oldest Gumba in the region built around 300 years ago while Buddhism was introduced to the Khumbu by Lama Sangwa Dorje. You continue heading to the northeast above the tree line nearby Imja Khola and get in Somare (4,010 meters), it takes 45 minutes to an hour to get in. The landscape becomes more arid and barren as you rich in Orsho within 15 minutes. Another 15 minutes walk, you get in small summer pasture dwelling at Tsuro Wang (aka, Warsa), the right branch trail heading to the Dingbuche, while left to the Pheriche, hence both trails final destination is Everest Base Camp.
After crossing the Labuche Khola, the trail ascends gently east onward to the Imja Valley with a huge farm terrace and settlement of Dingbuche (4,410 meters). For the rest of the day, you can walk around the Dingbuche Village, surrounded of wonderful mountains. Stay overnight at a tea house.
Day 6 trip highlight
Today is the second rest day for acclimatizing proposed. You take breakfast leisurely and prepare gear for the day hike. Among several side trips around the Dingboche, you are acceding to the crest of a ridge corner of the town at Nangkartshang Peak (5,615 meters), for the view of the 360-degree mountains including Mt. Makalu 8,463 meters (5th highest mountain in the world), Lhotse (4th highest mountain in the world at 8,516 meters), Cho Oyu (6th highest mountain in the world at 8,201 meters) and other mountains. This is only one viewpoint from where you can see the three highest mountains in the world in a glance.
The trail to the hill with Chorten above Dingboche is the same as the Everest Base Camp, and it ascends along the ridge steeply gain elevation above the valley. It takes about two hours to rich on top of the Nangkartshang Peak. You are not mandatory to climb all the way to the summit; you have a choice to return back any point of hiking.
For the day hike, you may visit the Chhukung (4,730 meters), Chhukung Ri (5,550 metes), Island Peak Base Camp, Ama Dablam Base Camp, or visit the HRA (Himalayan Rescue Association) at Pheriche for the high altitude lecture every day during trekking peak season. Enjoying the soaring high view from the peak, we will walk down to the tea house for an overnight stay.
Day 7 trip highlight
After recharge energy, on acclimatization day, the trail ascends to the ridge above the Dingboche to follow a tranquil high route, where Chorten is located. It is an enjoyable walk through the scenic pastureland, a summer dwelling for the yaks. You have a fortunate view of nature settings including Ama Dablam, Khangtega, Thamserku, Tawache, Cholatse, Lobuche and glimpse of Mt. Pumori.
At the edge of the pasture land, a trail from Pheriche meets the main trail and descends to cross a glacial stream to the Thukla (4,620m). A gentle walk takes 2 to 2 ½ hours from Dingbuche to Thukla. Take some rest at a tea house at Thukla, and the trail steeply ascends a crest to the Thukla Pass (4,830 meters) with Buddhist colorful flag filtering around the stone memorials, which were built for those climbers who have passed away during the expedition in the region. The view from here is spectacular around.
Walk a few minutes then you cross the stream near the west side of the Khumbu Glacier. The trail follows the stream along the wider valley, often bestows snow-capped mountains view, and finally begins to see tea houses and hotels at Lobuche nearby Khumbu Glacier. You are staying overnight at a tea house.
Day 8 trip highlight
From Lobuche, the trail goes nearby Khumbu Glacier with an amazing view, in fifteen minutes walk, you will see a sign of Pyramid International Laboratory - Observatory (Established by Italian at an altitude of 5,050 meters, an intriguing structure made of glass, conduct projects in glaciology and sedimentology in the surrounding areas, as well as physiology and medicine. Likewise, the research center has a meteorological station that collects data on monsoon development and other phenomena such as pollution levels and houses a seismological station as well.) To visit this research center takes 20 to 30 minutes’ walk on the north from Lobuche.
The trail to Gorak Shep (5,140 meters) goes gradually up to the bottom of the Lobuche Pass (5,110 meters), before getting in pass need to give extra effort for the steep ascending for 10 to 15 minutes and walk through the Changri Glacier a few down and mostly ups with loose rocks. In 2 to 3 hours walk from the Lobuche, the trail gets in the crest of the ridge above the Gorak Shep from where you have an amazing view of surrounding mountains including top of the world Mt. Everest (8,848 meters), Nuptse (7,861 meters), Lhostse (8,516 meters), Pumori (7,165 meters), etc. and marine of Khumbu Glacier, and Everest Base Camp and tea houses of Gorak Shep.
You check in the hotel/tea house and rest for while after having lunch, then heading to Mt. Everest Base Camp along the ridge of the Khumbu glacier. As Gorak Shep is the last tea house for the Everest Base Camp, you need to fill up your water bottle for the drink, keep warm enough cloth and other gear. The trail two and half-hours to three hours walk through the glacier with frequently up and down bring you north corner of the glacier and finally to get to Everest Base Camp (5,360 meters).
The path to the Everest Base Camp can be missing, so make sure your Sherpa guide will lead you. The trail will change every year due to the unstable glacier. If you visit during the spring season, you may talk with mountaineers about their lifetime experience, which are set up several tents on the glacier for the expedition. It seems like mini Thamel where you can get everything like cafe, restaurant, health camp. The wonderful view of the snowcapped mountain soaring in the sky and breathtaking scenery of Khumbu icefall are making the trip unforgettable, even though you cannot see Mt. Everest from the Base Camp.
After spending some time, you will return back tea house at Gorak Shep for the overnight stay. Nowadays, there is internet services available even in Everest Base Camp and Kalapatthar by Everest Link and mobile services.
Day 9 trip highlight
Today is the most significant day entire trip. Early in the morning, you begin the hike to the Kalapatthar (5,550 meters) with a cup of hot tea at the tea house. The trail ascends steeply from the lodge for 20 minutes and a further walk gets in the plateau, where the Nepalese Government held a cabinet meeting on December 4, 2009, a week before the year’s world summit on climate change in Copenhagen to attention global warming issue and its impact in the mountain (origin of the freshwater).
Then the trail ascends steeply to the Kalapathar (Saskrit/Nepalese for “Black Rock”), from where you have a breathtaking view of a banquet of Peaks standing above the Khumbu Glacier. Most of the trekkers hike to Kalapathar early in the morning for the best weather. However, with the position of the sun rising through Mt. Everest, so it is very difficult to take a good picture of Everest in the morning time. Sunset is the best time to capture the pictures of Everest and other mountains with golden color but you need a towel prepared with warm clothes, a headlight, and a bottle of water because the temperature can be suddenly dropped, after sunset.
From the top of the Kalapathhar, you can observe the Everest Base Camp down below on the moraine of Khumbu glacier. Kalapatthar bestows landscape and mountains view such as Mt. Pumari (7,145 meters), Lingtren (6,695 meters), Khumbutse (6,623 meters), Changtse (7,550 meters), Nupse (7879 meters), and even Everest itself. You return back to Gorak Shep and retrace back to Thukla and descend to the Pheriche for the overnight stay.
Day 10 trip highlight
After breakfast, you are descending to Tengboche retrace the previous trail. At the end of the town, you cross the Khumbu River (aka, Lobuche Khola) and ascend to the hill with a Buddhist prayer flag and a heap of stone, the locals offered a stone to the deity for the safe journey to the destination. The gently dropping down trail meet the trail to the Dingboche and walk continue to the Somare, Pangboche, Dibuche and get to Tengboche.
During the peak season, you will see many trekkers, porters, Yak Caravan, some time you will stock more than 10 minutes to pass the traffic on the bridge. While walking on the trail, you are advised to stand corner side while passing by Yaks and mule. As you already stayed at Tengboche, you may visit a look around which you have not explored last time. Tengboche is the most beautiful place located on top of the hill with amazing mountains scenery like Ama Dablam, Everest, Mt. Lhotse, and Lhotse Shar towards the northeast.
This is another beautiful day hike to the Namche bazaar. Snap the breathtaking mountains view once more before leaving, the Tengboche and the trail descend nearby the west edge of the town exit from the well-decorated gate and old Chorten. About 1 to ½ hours walk down the hill through the alpine forest, you will get in Phuge Thaga and cross the Dudha Koshi River ascend through the pine, Juniper, rhododendron forest to the Sanasa and Kyanjuma village. This is one of the hardest parts of today's trek.
From there, the trail goes down gradually enjoying with picturesque landscape and wonderful mountains view. In 4 to 5 hours walk from Tengboche, you will get to Namche Bazaar. The rest of the time, wander around the making area, hanging café, shops, and bars. Stay overnight at Namche Bazaar.
Day 11 trip highlights
Today is a bit longer walk to the Lukla but you are not feeling that much hard due to all the way down and some flat through the various Sherpa Settlement. After an exit from the town, the trail descends through the forest where more chances to see Nepalese National Bird “Daphe” (colorful birds with nine different, known as Himalayan Monal/Lophophorus Impejanus/also known as the Impeyan monal and Impeyan pheasant) and Himalayan Thar with long hair.
In one hour to two hours, you will descend to the confluence of Bhotekoshi and Dudh Koshi, cross the exciting suspension bridge and walk to the Joesale along the riverside and climb a hill to the Manjo Check Post. Today, you will cross more than seven bridges all the way to the Lukla. Probably, you will have lunch at Phakding and another 2 to 3 hours walk to the Lukla via Ghat.
Your guide will visit the airline office to make confirm your next day flight to Kathmandu/Ramechhap. As this is the last day of the trek, celebrate with the crew at dinner time like a mini-party. Some of the porters are staying at Lukla for further jobs, so they are not coming back to Kathmandu. If you are happy with them, you may treat them from your heart according to your desire. Stay overnight at the tea house.
Day 12 trip highlights
Most of the flights from Kathmandu to Lukla and to Kathmandu operated in the morning. The late flight won’t be sure due to unpredictable weather in the high Himalayan. You will be heading to Tenzing Hillary Airport according to your flight time. As you already have experience with the Lukla flight, this is an exciting scenic flight about 25 to 30 minutes to Kathmandu. After collecting the luggage, drive to the hotel, and the rest of the day is free on your own.
Day 13 trip highlight
Note: Nowadays, there is no direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla during trekking peak season due to air traffic. So, you need to be flying Lukla to Manthali Airport at Ramechhap about 20 minutes and 132 kilometers drive to Kathmandu in 4 to 5 hours. The rest of the day does your own. Stay overnight at Hotel.
It is the last day of your Nepal trip. Nepal Mother House Treks & Expedition Pvt. Ltd. will hand over the trekking permit, TIMS Card, and trip appreciation card to you as souvenirs. They will request feedback on the trip, including their teamwork, accommodation, transportation, etc. to provide top-notch services for upcoming clients. You may do last minutes shopping for the souvenir to your family and beloved. A driver will come to your hotel two and a half to three hours before then your flight for the airport transfer to the International Airport (KTM) for your onwards destination flight, collecting lifetime experience from the Himalayan.
Day 14 trip highlight
Are you wondering how difficult is Everest base camp trek is? Everest Base Camp trek difficulty level is marked moderate. Well preparing for the Everest base camp trek helps to make your trip successful, so you should do some exercise in the last three months before the departure date.
Everest Base Camp Trek is suitable for beginners who don’t have trekking experience. The trail will include many steep, rugged, rocky, and snowy paths. Therefore, good physical fitness is needed to go on this trek. You don't need any prior trekking experience to go on Everest Base Camp Trek, however, if you have one it will definitely help you a lot.
You are advised to do some physical exercise such as doing Yoga every day, heart cardiology exercise, morning walk with a small day bag, hiking each weekend, and participating in gym club a few months before Trek starting date.

Normally, the daily distance in the Everest Base Camp Trek is approximately 4 to 5 hours, except the day of Gorak Shep to EBC and Kalapatthar. Mostly the day trip commences seven to 7:30 a.m. after having breakfast at the same tea house where you stayed. The trail goes through the Sherpa settlements and passes Buddhist Mane walls and monasteries enjoying natural beauties and mountains vista. After two and a half to three hours walk, you will stop for the lunch, where you have various food choices on the menu cards. Again, you will walk another 2 to 3 hours to the day's destination.
Everest Base Camp Trek is measured as moderate to strenuous for its difficulty level. Most of the trail goes gradually up making zigzag through the alpine jungle, rugged cliff on the mountain paths, from where amazing view awarded while taking a rest and a chat with fellow. However, there is some steep ascent in some parts of the trip.
The day third from Phakding to Namche is not an easy path, the trail ascent rapidly at confluence Bhote Koshi and Dudha Koshi to the naturally blessed Namche Bazaar, and on the next day the part of Punge Thagna to Tengboche also quite difficult due to its ascent. Likewise, the day eighth from Dingboche to Lobuche at Thukla Tea house to the top of the Thukla Pass needs more effort as the hardest part of the trek. And while climbing to the most popular viewpoint at Kalapathar also another difficult part of the trek.

There are many ways to get safe drinking water during this trekking holiday. It depends on individual interest and availability. You can easily get boiling and filter water, a bottle of mineral water, self-treated purified water (using Iodine/chlorine/ filter machine/UV Steripen) at every tea house on the trek.
The bottle of mineral water has been banned by the local government of Kumbu since 2020 January to minimize pollution. So, you have the option to buy boiling water and treat the water yourself. The cost of boiled drinking water soars as you travel higher along the elevation. The average range of cost is NPR 50 to NPR 150 Lukla to Namche Bazaar and then increases afterward. To minimize the cost, it is also better to use an iodine/chlorine/ filter machine /UV steripen to purify raw tap water.

The airplane is the major means of transportation for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Lukla is the getaway of the Khumbu region, where more than 40 flights are conducted every day during trekking peak season. The flights are operated every day from Kathmandu to Lukla by different airlines, such as Tara Air, Sita Air, and Summit Air.
Normally, the early flight is most reliable due to good weather. The high mountains weather is unpredictable; it could be covered by clouds or blowing strong wind anytime after midday. As result, Lukla flights are often delayed or canceled for a day, so it would be better to add some extra days to get back to Kathmandu if case weather is not permitted to fly.
There are helicopter services available for Lukla and back to Kathmandu as another option. Even it is more costly, you won’t regret flying by helicopter for your lifetime expiring in the Himalayan.
Nowadays, the road has access to nearby Lukla at Kharikhola and Bupsa, which is a day camp below Lukla. The jeep leaves early morning from Chehabil, Kathmandu to the Salleri, and drives to Kharikhola talking about a whole day. After completing the road to Lukla, and it is possible to drive Kathmandu to Lukla by bus in one day at a cheaper cost.
