Day 1: Kayaking

  • Duration: 4 - 5 hours
  • Distance: 12 kilometers / 7.5 miles

This trip begins at 09:00 at Nordic Ventures' floating base in Voss from where transport to the fjord is included or you can meet them at our Sea Kayaking Center in Gudvangen by 10:00. The trips usually return to Gudvangen by 5:00 pm and back in Voss by 6.30 pm on the last day.

The drive from Voss to Gudvangen, the starting place at the Nærøyfjord, is very scenic. On your way, you pass the Stalheim gorge before entering the Nærøyvalley leading down to Gudvangen at the mouth of the fjord. The Nærøyfjord, Gudvangen and the valley leading up to Stalheim have been a popular tourism destination for almost 150 years - not without a reason – the scenery is spectacular and here you will be spending 3 days kayaking and hiking on this incredible Norway Outdoor Adventure!

At Nordic Ventures' base in Gudvangen, your guide first goes through the plans for the tour before you get you equipped with your personal paddle gear for the tour. Assistance with pre-trip packing and preparations is provided as necessary. All clients receive comprehensive personalized instruction and a kayak safety briefing before getting on the water. If you have any luggage or belongings that you will not be needing to take with you on your trip let your guide know and they will be able to store them in the storage area.

This trip will take you to the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage area in the spectacular Nærøyfjord. You will experience all this from a sea kayaker's and hiker's perspective. The itinerary allows you plenty of time to get to know the other people on the tour well – it is rather like a group of friends paddling together than a guided tour.

On the trip, you will visit areas only accessible by kayak or boats. Late afternoon on Day 1, you arrive at the campsite for the night where you pull out our kayaks and take a well-deserved rest. After setting up camp, you may relax and enjoy the quiet atmosphere of the area. In the evening, you enjoy a delicious barbecue dinner before relaxing around the campfire.

Day 2: Hiking

  • Duration: 10 - 11 hours
  • Distance: 20.7 kilometers / 12.8 miles roundtrip
  • Elevations: 1300 meters / 4265 feet up and down

On the morning of Day 2, you pack your daypacks after breakfast and begin your hike up the valley above Dyrdal. Your aim is to reach the highlands and summits above the fjords and get a spectacular view of the fjord from above. For walking the tracks, firm footwear is required, but hiking boots are not essential.

During May, June, and parts of July, you are likely to hike on snow up in the mountains as you go past the tree border – the landscape and vegetation are rapidly changing up here – you pass melt water lakes, snow patches, and waterfalls as you make your way up towards the summits.

The hike climbs about 1,200 meters in just over 10 kilometers, passing a lovely mountain lake along the way. The reward at the top is an eye-popping panorama South overlooking the Nærøyfjord towards Bakkanosi.

U-shaped glacier valleys are clearly visible in the upper landscape as we reach the plateau above the timberline. It’s truly one of the best views in the whole UNESCO World Heritage area and well worth the workout.

The upper trails may not be snow-free until as late as late June, but the brief summer season brings a spectacular and colorful display of subalpine wildflowers – on many tours, you collect wild blueberries and strawberries and fill your water bottles with clean water from streams and rivers along the trail.

After reaching the top, you can enjoy some great views of the fjord, some 1000 meters below you, before you head back down to your campsite where you will spend another night with dinner and a campfire after the day's hiking. You spend the night at camp in your tents and get some well-deserved rest.

Day 3: Kayaking

  • Duration: 4 - 5 hours
  • Distance: 12 kilometers / 7.5 miles

After a leisurely breakfast on Day 3, you break up camp, pack up your kayaks, and get back on the water late morning. You then continue kayaking north throughout the Nærøyfjord and explore the magnificent cliff faces found here – hopefully, you can spot some seals along your way. You are entering a part of the fjord where take-outs are rare and will visit one of the more majestic waterfalls entering the fjord in the outer part of the Nærøyfjord. You stop for lunch in the early afternoon when you come over a suitable pull-out.

Mid-afternoon, you arrive in Undredal, a remote village at the Aurlandsfjord, where you finish kayaking and pull out your kayaks. You will be able to enjoy a well-deserved ice cream in the sun before the company shuttle arrives and returns you back to the base in Gudvangen. There, you unload and sort out your personal items.

Arriving back at Voss late afternoon/ early evening, you may choose to stay in Voss or travel onwards to Bergen or Oslo. Nordic Ventures will be happy to assist you in making plans as a part of your booking process.

Best Season

Nordic Ventures runs the trip all season, and each trip is different in terms of flora, fauna, and weather. • No accommodation / hotel is included on the trip, but Nordic Ventures could suggest places to stay before and after the trip
  • They recommend guests arrive in Norway at least a day before the trip and stay in Voss or Gudvangen for easier logistics on the morning of the tour start (own cost)
  • The tour will finish at around 17:00 on the last day, and Nordic Ventures will drop guests off at Voss around 18:00 where there are trains to Bergen, Oslo, or other destinations
