Maria learned about yoga in college and has been practicing it for 13 years. She arrived in Costa Rica in 2010 and started her studies in Tantric Philosophy. In 2019, Maria got her first two certifications of 200 hours each time with Playa Negra Yoga School. In 2021, she took a 100-hour advanced course. She has been teaching for 8 years. Maria wrote her own yoga manual and created a beginner's course. She has had her own yoga shala in Playa Negra, Guanacaste for 5 years and teaches neighbors and clients of the family lodge. She has 3 years of experience running yoga retreats.

"A wonderful customizable jungle experience"

My 7-day trip with Maria Jose in Yoga Nature Costa Rica (also known as Barba Negra Lodge) was an unforgettable experience! She makes it very customizable - it can include yoga classes, barre intensity classes, guided meditations, trips to the closest beach Playa Negra, trips to nearby beaches, and absolutely delicious meals every day made fresh with local ingredients by her friendly husband Jeremy.

My trip was in July and I was lucky it didn’t rain much since it’s the green season, but it was definitely hot and humid - be sure to bring clothing to keep you cool, sunblock, bug spray, a beach towel, and a hat. The room had a ceiling fan, thank goodness.

It’s an absolutely beautiful place and lovely family you get to connect with. A very unique experience!
