The Garden of Nâm is a proper working ashram and monastery in the Spanish hills. If you are looking for an authentic ashram experience, this is it. The daily schedule consists of three 30 min meditation sessions and three hour long yoga sessions. Silence is encouraged at three points in the day - from waking until the first meditation, 2pm until dinner (lunch) and 6pm until supper. There is a period of sewa, where guests can help in the garden or kitchen in a contemplative manner. The yoga classes focus on breathwork, chanting and gentle movement and won't be like the asana-heavy classes you may be used to back home (although we did try crow pose, which is a beast of a move). Accommodation is basic and comfortable. The food was healthy, fresh and vegetarian. If you are used to a more carb-heavy diet though, you may find yourself craving a big stack of buttery toast. If you are travelling in the winter months it can get cold at night. There is the option for a harp mood meditation, where the head honcho himself will play for you, which was an emotional experience.
Garden of Nâm is a great choice if you are looking for a real ashram with people seeking reflection and contemplation. The meditation sessions were healing, the people friendly and the food was great. Thanks to Andjanie & Hubertus and all the permanent residents for being such lovely, welcoming people.
