Paje by Night is located in Paje, along the southeast coast of Zanzibar. It is located in a very verdant plot just a minute's walk from the most beautiful beach on the southeast coast, the beach of Paje. Paje by Night wishes you to know that the program is not a strict yoga retreat. It is rather a yoga holiday. You will meet other like-minded people practicing yoga at any level, followed by a professional teacher, but also kite surfers or divers and Africa's explorers. About 50% of the guests are solo travelers.

Paje by Nght is located 100 meters inside the beach.

They have 19 bungalows overlooking the garden, the yoga studio, a bar and a restaurant, a swimming pool with jacuzzi, a Balinese spa hut and a detached kiteschool on the beach, where you can spend your time sunbathing, swimming in the sea, kitesurfing or doing SUP. Hakuna Matata Kiteschool is approximately 400 meters from the hotel.

All bungalows overlook the garden and have air conditioning and a private en-suite bathroom. There are 3 categories:

The Standard Bungalows are 15 sqm and feature a double bed.

The King Size Bungalows are 22 sqm and can be double or triple. The double can feature a double bed or 2 twin beds. The triple features 3 single beds.

The Concept Bungalows are 22 sqm and feature a double bed. Each one has its unique décor and style. If you prefer one of them in particular let Paje know at the time of booking. If possible, they will be happy to assign it to you - but no guarantee!

Program

This yoga holiday consists of 10 sessions typically one morning Ashtanga Mysore drop-in class (90 minutes) and one afternoon Vinyasa drop-in-led yoga class (75 minutes) every day, except on Sundays, Saturdays (1 lesson), and arrival day or departure day (depending on your travel schedule).

A 60-minute massage at the Bali Spa is also included in the price.

If your travel schedule allows you can add extra classes on arrival and departure days. These can be booked and paid on-site.

Ashtanga yoga is a rigorous, active, dynamic, energetic, sweaty, physically demanding practice that requires synchronization between breath and movements. They do this class Mysore style which means that each student in the group is taught individually according to his or her level, readiness and ability.

This class is given at the beachfront rooftop from Zanzibarista coffee house (150 m distance) on Wednesdays and Fridays and at the shala in the hotel’s garden for the rest of the days.

After the lessons at Zanzibarista you can enjoy a fresh brewed cappuccino or ice cold homemade lemonade overlooking the quiet lagune from the Indian Ocean from your lounge seat.

The evening class is typically a led Vinyasa Flow class. Like Ashtanga yoga, Vinyasa flow also consists of a traditional series of postures linked by flowing movements, but unlike the rigorous Ashtanga style, Vinyasa flow allows you to vary the pace between poses and gives you more freedom in building the sequences. As such, this lesson is much less intense than the morning one. The emphasis during this class will be on specific postures in order to work on hip opening, back bends, stretching and balance. This class is always given at the shala in the hotel’s garden.

The rest of the day is entirely up to you. You can spend it relaxing, sunbathing, snorkeling, swimming, walking on the beach, diving or kitesurfing, and still, there is time to go on excursions and explore the island.

Food

On food, they are flexible. The menu a la carte of their Italian restaurant offers a variety of dishes to choose from, most notably organic breakfasts, fish and seafood responsibly fished from the ocean, big healthy salads, meat, fresh homemade pasta, traditional soups, and real Italian wood-fired pizzas. They also offer very nice 100% fresh fruit sugar-free juices, and smoothies as well as wines, beers, coffee, and tea.

Most ingredients are freshly outsourced locally responsibly. They do not use palm oil. In their kitchen, you will only find extra virgin olive oil and sunflower oil.

The Bali Spa

Asih was born in Jakarta in June 1973. She is a qualified physiotherapist and a professional masseuse with many years of experience. If you are not sure which massage to take, after a brief talk and sensing your body she will be able to give you her suggestion or recommend the best combination of services for you. If you are frail or stiff she will be able to adjust manipulation to your level of comfort. It’s her challenge to make you feel good, happy, and energetic!

Face massage

A great anti-ageing skin care in itself. Stimulating the face muscles with a massage increases the levels of oxygen and blood circulation in that area hence the production of collagen which gives a healthy and natural glow to the skin.

Face massage and Lulur

If you want to get the best out of your face massage combine it with Lulur. Lulur is a traditional royal ritual done 40 days before the wedding to prepare the skin for the big night. The first step is scrubbing with rice flour, turmeric, and yogurt to exfoliate and remove the dead cells, then comes the massage and after that a mask that can be honey-based (if you want to lift your skin) or aloe vera-based (if you want to soothe it after a day in the sun). The result is baby-soft skin with an enchanting look and feel.

Sports massage

This can be a pre-event, a post-event, or a maintenance massage. Pre-event massage is done to stimulate the flow of blood and loosen the muscles. Post-event massage is light and gentle on already stressed muscles. It helps loosen tired, stiff muscles; alleviate soreness; remove lactic acid; and maintain flexibility. Maintenance massages are done to maintain the ideal conditions. This can be performed with or without oil.

Reflexology

The theory behind reflexology is that specific points and areas on feet, hands, and ears are connected to specific organs and body systems. Appropriate pressure to these specific points and areas stimulates the nervous system and releases tension and stress.

Exotic Java and Bali massage

These traditional oil-based massages have been used for centuries in Indonesia. They both combine feet reflexology, deep thumb pressure, stroking, and circular kneading palm movements to break down tensely knotted muscles, and stimulate the body's lymphatic system and blood circulation. While the Balinese massage is stronger and rougher, the Javanese one is softer.

Ask for advice if you are not sure which one to choose. The two can also be combined to work differently in each specific area. They both deliver a sense of well-being and deep relaxation.

Yoga Thai massage

The Yoga Thai massage consists of slow, rhythmic compressions and stretches along the body's energy lines using the palms of the hands, thumbs, elbows, and feet. Practitioners also position the body into yoga-like poses and gently rock it to open the joints and facilitate limbering. The massage can be performed with or without oil and you will need to wear loose-fitting clothes.

Relaxing Swedish massage

Relax your senses with a full body treatment using Zanzibar spice oils to calm your nervous system and leave you completely at peace.

Lymphatic drainage massage

This detoxifying massage uses light pressure and long, gentle, rhythmic strokes and soft pumping movements to improve the flow of lymph which brings oxygen and nutrients to the cell collecting toxins on the way and flushing them out through the lymph nodes. It helps boost the immune system, reduce water retention, clean skin pores, and fight cellulite. This is perfect after a long flight.

Deep tissue massage

The deep tissue massage works the deeper layers of muscles and the surrounding connective tissue by applying firm pressure and slow strokes, using the palms of the hands, elbows, and forearms. It is ideal to remove blockage around painful, contracted areas such as a stiff neck, sore shoulders, upper and low back pain, and leg muscle tightness. It’s done with oil.

Spa recommendations

Notify the spa manager or receptionist before booking your treatment if you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, allergies, or have other physical ailments or disabilities.

Cancellation

Paje By Night asks you to provide 24 hours in advance notice when canceling or rescheduling an appointment. If a cancellation notice is not given on time they reserve the right to charge a 50% cancellation fee.
