Adventurous USA Motorcycle Tour

Join Pohutukawa Motorcycle Touring on this 13-day tour, beginning in central Colorado and looping through the mystical Black Hills of South Dakota before swinging through Montana and the fantastic Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and returning back to end in central Colorado. Picking up your bike and leaving Aurora, Colorado, you will ride through the rugged prairie beauty of Nebraska and South Dakota and sweep through the Black Hills of South Dakota, before climbing the world-famous passes leading to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, giving you a close-up view of the amazing scenery.

This exciting tour includes 12 nights' accommodation in comfortable modern hotels.

Program

Day 1 (25 miles / 42 kilometers, approximately 0.40 hours riding)

After arriving at Denver International Airport, you’ll be met at the airport and shuttled to your hotel to check in and then to pick up your bike. Today is set aside to allow you to settle in and rest up before the adventure begins tomorrow. The day will include a safety meeting to review road rules and safety requirements and a “get to know you” dinner.

Day 2 (458 miles / 774 kilometers, approximately 7 hours riding)

Leaving your hotel and the city behind you, set out on a long day, riding through wide open prairies, putting you in the middle of the cattle country, famous from the great western movies of last century, stopping along the way to visit major landmarks, from the days when these prairies where crossed by settlers searching for a new life.

Day 3 (184 miles / 311 kilometers, approximately 4 hours riding)

Today will take you through the famous Black Hills, stopping for a number of interactive events, experiencing wild animals up close as you cruise along-side bison and other wildlife. Zig zagging though the hills brings you to the early western town of Deadwood before riding back to your hotel for the evening.

Day 4: Rest day (50 miles / 85 kilometers, approximately 0.75 hours riding)

Today is a free day for you to catch up on all those important things like sorting out photos, writing down all the key points of your tour so far, sending postcards to friends and family and even getting that pesky laundry taken care of. Maybe enjoy exploring the local area.

Day 5 (413 miles / 698 kilometers, approximately 6.40 hours riding)

Heading out early, the road takes you to see the intriguing Devils Tower, before cruising a well-maintained road that takes you alongside one of the most famous battlefields in the old west. Stop to visit and soak up the spirit of the location. You will feel the history as you walk in the footsteps of those that fought here.

Day 6 (181 miles / 306 kilometers, approximately 3.30 hours riding)

This is a GoPro day with some fantastic riding ahead of you. You will get lost in the moment as you climb through amazing twisting tight corners. Amazing views, open skies, and great roads will make this a day to remember. Riding through open country, alongside gentle rivers you will experience free-roaming animals. Keep your cameras handy.

Day 7: Rest day (50 miles / 85 kilometers, approximately 0.75 hours riding)

Sleep in today and enjoy a rest day for you to catch up on all those important things like sorting out photos, writing down all the key points of your tour so far, sending postcards to friends and family and even getting that bothersome laundry taken care of. Maybe enjoy exploring the local area.

Day 8 (161 miles / 271 kilometers, approximately 3 hours riding)

Cruise through thermal areas, stopping to view hot mud pools, geysers and fantastic waterfalls, intermixed with rugged mountains, immense valleys, green forests, and the possibility of seeing free-roaming bison, bears, wolves, and other wild animals.

Day 9 (285 miles / 482 kilometers, approximately 4.3 hours riding)

A fun day takes you through the open prairies of Wyoming and back into the Rocky Mountains areas of Utah. Easy riding will have those miles flying by as you approach the mountains and your destination for the night.

Day 10 (251 miles / 422 kilometers, approximately 4.5 hours riding)

Another GoPro day takes you over one of the highest passes in North America. Stops along the way in small mountain towns for breaks and to enjoy the scenery make this a fun day. Watch out for animals along the road, while enjoying the climb up over the 14,000 feet mountain pass. You will spend the night in a peaceful mountain town.

Day 11 (200 miles / 335 kilometers, approximately 5 hours riding)

Another GoPro day takes you over one of the highest passes in North America. Stops along the way in small mountain towns for breaks and to enjoy the scenery make this a fun day. Watch out for animals along the road, while enjoying the climb up over the 14,000 foot mountain pass.

You will spend the night in a peaceful mountain town.

Day 12 (113 miles / 191kilometers, approximately 2.5 hours riding)

Today is another GoPro day, which takes you along the base of the Rocky Mountains with stops along the way in small mountain towns for breaks and to enjoy the scenery make this a fun day. Continuing Sth along some exciting sweepers brings you back to Aurora to your hotel, before dropping off your bike. A shuttle ride returns you to your hotel.

Day 13

After a relaxing breakfast, you will catch your shuttle to the airport. This shuttle ride is filled with talk about the adventure you’ve just had and the fun experienced. Now is the time to start planning your next Pohutukawa Motorcycle Tours adventure. If you want to stay on for additional nights, that can be arranged.

Skill level(s) required for this tour: intermediate, advanced

Intermediate:

  • can ride for 3-4 hours
  • average riding experience
  • little assistance required
  • comfortable with extreme curves and leans
  • average experience with unsurfaced roads
  • steep ascents and descents

Advanced:

  • can ride for 5-6 hours
  • extensive riding experience
  • assistance on demand (if required)
  • experienced with riding a variety of motorcycles
  • comfortable with any terrain and weather conditions

About the tour

This tour is suitable for intermediate or advanced riders. There are some high mile days.

Riding ranges from relaxed sweepers to twisty mountain passes with fantastic views. Conquer these passes and visit some of the outstanding national and state parks located in this Western riding paradise.

The roads in Colorado and surrounding states are in good condition with light traffic out of the cities. City traffic can be heavy at times. Other than road repairs you will not be required to ride on any unsealed roads. Note: USA drivers drive on the right-hand side of the road.

Motorcycles available for this tour

Use your own motorcycle or rent a motorcycle, which is licensed, and safety inspected and verified by the State government. If you choose to rent one from Pohutukawa Motorcycle Touring, you may choose from the following categories:

  • Category A: BMW R1200 RT WC, BMW R1200 GS WC, BMW K1600 GTL, BMW R1200 RT
  • Category B: BMW 650GS, Triumph Tiger 800 XC, Kawasaki Concours 14

The price includes bike rental, excluding insurance or damage waiver or auxiliary equipment such as GPS or optional fittings.

The tour will take place in the US. Starting from Aurora, Colorado, you will ride through the rugged prairie beauty of Wyoming and South Dakota and sweep through the hills of South Dakota, before climbing the world-famous passes leading to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, then return to Aurora.

Food

Breakfast and dinner during riding days are included in the price. Lunch and meals during free days will be at your own expenses.

Once you exit the airport arrival lounge area, your tour host will meet you. Your host will be holding a sign reading "Pohutukawa Motorcycle Tours". He or She will assist you with your luggage and assist you with your shuttle.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.
  • The deposit is non-refundable, if the booking is cancelled.
  • The rest of the payment should be paid 30 days before arrival.
