Muay Thai

Muay Thai is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. This physical and mental discipline which includes combat on shins is known as "the art of eight limbs" because it is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins.

Muay Thai is associated with a good physical preparation that makes a full-contact fighter very efficient. It became widespread internationally in the twentieth century, when practitioners defeated notable practitioners of other martial arts.

Muay Thai can be traced back to the 16th century, developed from the fighting style of the famous fighter Nai Khanomtom. Its ancestor is Muay Boran (or “ancient boxing”), which in the 1930s was formalized with rules and equipment influenced by Western boxing.

Rawai Muay Thai Profile

Rawai Muay Thai Camp in Khao Lak

Tuk and Diana opened Rawai Muay Thai in 2003. Back then there were few Muay Thai gyms around, and hardly any that taught foreigners so they had to start from scratch. The gym was located in Rawai village, in the South of Phuket, thus the name of the camp. First there was only one ring and four bags. With time more boxing rings were built and more trainers hired. But at first there was only one student (Adam from the UK) and two trainers.

Over the years they grew to become one of the premiere Muay Thai gyms in the country with students from all over the world coming to train. They also trained aspiring young Thai boxers who wanted to become champions. Their fighters have boxed in Bangkok’s prestigious stadiums like Lumpini and Rajadamnern, in big promotions like Thai Fight and on TV.

Their boxers have also competed abroad. They have won numerous stadium titles as well as the World Muay Thai Council (WMC) and the World Professional Muay Thai Federation (WPMF) titles. Their goal with every fighter is to make them the best that they can be. They stress fitness and good technique. Their teaching method is the traditional way that Muay Thai has been taught for decades, the way Tuk and his brothers learned growing up.

After 10 exciting years in Phuket they decided to move to the quieter town of Khao Lak. In their opinion Phuket has grown too much and is no longer the best location for training purposes. There are too many distractions there (night clubs, bars, malls, traffic). Khao Lak is a tranquil seaside village, not developed much, perfect for enjoying the sea and nature. And most of all, perfect for focusing on you training.

At Rawai Muay Thai the guests train daily. The gym is spacious, with four large boxing rings, 19 kicking/punching bags, large mirrors, jigsaw mat flooring and fitness room (with air-con); women’s and men’s locker rooms with showers. The rooms surround the gym. They have private and shared accommodation at the camp. There is a nice swimming pool and restaurant as well a a massage hut, gym shop, and gym office. The gym is open daily, 365 days a year.

They welcome people from everywhere who have an interested in learning the Thai national sport. They welcome women and men of all levels, from complete beginners to professional boxers. The classes are a fun workout. One word of warning: they can be addictive!

Location

Rawai Muay Thai-Khao Lak is located about 1 hour north of Phuket airport, following the coastal road. Rawai Muay Thai is 5 km north of Khao Lak town, near Khuk Khak beach, and the J.W. Marriott hotel. The camp is on 8,000 square meters of tropical land, surrounded by coconut trees and palm trees. The area is very quiet and calm, perfect for training and relaxing.

There is much to see and do in Khao Lak. There are beautiful beaches to swim in, waterfalls and parks to visit, shop and eat in the fresh food market, and water activities including snorkeling and diving in the world famous Similan Islands. There is a horse farm, a golf driving range and golf course and elephant camps, all close to the camp as well.

Beaches near the camp

On Saturday mornings we train in the beach. If the weather is good we hop on our scooters and pick-up trucks and head to Khuk Kak Beach, about 2 KM from the camp.

Snorkeling and diving trips to the nearby Similan and Surin Islands is by far the most spectacular thing you can do while visiting Khao Lak. These tropical islands are open only during high season only (mid October to Mid May). Our good friend, Olof, offers boat trips to Similan Islands. He focuses on snorkeling tours to the world famous islands where you can see marine life at its best. For more information you can visit the Poseidon Similan Tours website.

Downtown Khao Lak is located 5 KM south of the camp. You will find restaurants, shop, markets, banks, hotels and more here. Downtown is only a few blocks long and very quiet in the low season (April - October).

Near the gym you can find beautiful waterfalls worth visiting. Tuk's favorite is beautiful waterfall in thailandSai Rung Waterfall (also known as Pak Weep waterfall or Rainbow Waterfall). Is it located near the Pullman Resort hotel and Beyond Resort Hotel, about 15 minutes from the camp. The best time to visit the waterfall is in the rainy season, from June - October.

About 1 hour away from the camp you can reach Khao Sok National Park. It is immense and offers everything from elephant trekking, cave and river tours, floating bungalows and beautiful flora to gaze at. The best time of the year to visit is from November to May.

In Bang Niang (about 3 KM from the camp) and downtown Khao Lak (about 5 KM from the camp) there are lots of restaurants to choose from. We recommend: Green Pepper, Jai, Smile, Pad Thai, Mango Cafe, Aon Cafe,... Pretty much, if there are lots of people eating then the restaurant is good.

Khaolak Horse Club is located 5 KM from Rawai Muay Thai camp, on the road to Chongfah Waterfall. Khun Ju, the owner of the club, has a beautiful horse ranch and offers horseback riding lessons and trails. You can ride the horses through mountain trails and on the beach! For more information and to make a booking call: 093-727-1552.

You can golf at the Navy Golf Course in Thap Lamu which is located about 15 minutes South of the the gym. This beautiful 18 hole golf course has a stunning view of the Andaman Sea.

How to get there

Arrival by airplane

The closest airport to Khao Lak is Phuket International airport. Most people take a flight from Bangkok to Phuket. Then they take a car ride to Khao Lak (either using our airport pick-up service or the airport taxis).

A flight from Bangkok to Phuket takes approximately 1 hour. A ticket from Bangkok to Phuket can be purchased over the counter at Bangkok International Airport but you will get the best price if you book your domestic flight more than 72 hours in advance.

When booking your domestic flight from Bangkok to Phuket you should allow 3 - 4 hours to clear customs from your international flight & check in for your domestic flight.

Please note: There are 2 airports in Bangkok. Which airport you land at will usually depend on which airline you are traveling with. Most international flights fly into Suvarnabhumi airport. Only a few airlines use Don Muang airport (Nok Air and 1- Go, for example).

Arrival by bus

The bus from Bangkok to Khao Lak takes 11 hours and costs approximately 950 Thai Baht. The bus does, however, pass right through Khao Lak so for those guests who want to take the bus, just let the driver know you want to get off at Khao Lak.

Travel Warning: Bus travels between Bangkok to Khao Lak - Many students have complained that the contents of their bags/ backpacks have been tampered with during the bus trip. Items such as ipods, cameras, and mobile phones are all easily converted into cash by criminals. Lock your bags with a quality padlock whenever you are travelling by bus in Thailand and don't check the bags in the bus baggage compartment. Just keep them in your sight at all times.

Arrival by train

The nearest train station to Khao Lak is 450 km away at Surat Thani. The train ride to Surat Thani is not recommended, mostly because the train runs at night and you can't see anything and the train leaves you really far from Khao Lak.

Airport: Phuket International Airport Airport transfer available:Phuket International Airport (US$ 37 per person) Additional charges may apply. You can request this in the next step.

Cancellation Policy

  • A reservation requires a deposit of 10% of the total price.
