Why choose this healing retreat?

As a team of five, including their shamans, teachers, and healers, Tapovan Tamas has dedicated decades to enhancing the human journey towards self-actualization by exploring consciousness through various practices such as mantra, yoga, meditation, breathwork, Qi gong, plant medicine, music, art, embracing a healthy lifestyle, and practicing self-discipline.

Tapovan Tamas' aim is for you to achieve long-lasting, transformative growth even after your departure. They are committed to equipping you with simple yet highly effective spiritual tools that will assist you in maintaining a well-balanced mental state.

These tools involve regular self-observation, the integration of emotional healing, and the release of energetic blocks and trauma.

Their dedication revolves around facilitating the ascension of collective human consciousness by supporting the healing journeys of individuals who are prepared and willing to embark on the path of self-realignment. They achieve this through a fusion of potent yogic techniques and indigenous shamanic wisdom.

This mission has inspired them to create experiences that can:

  • Restore the healing memory of the cells
  • Cleanse trapped emotions both in your psyche and physical body
  • Establish new, healthy patterns across all aspects of daily life
  • Allow you to bask in the bliss of your beautifully imperfect divinity
  • Educate you on health and offer valuable lifestyle tips for rejuvenation
  • Provide you with specific breath and meditation tools that you can carry forward in your life

During the retreat, Ayahuasca facilitates the restoration of your cells’ memories, allowing your body to heal and rejuvenate in a way that is unique to your individual needs. This process often leads to the energetic clearing of deeply ingrained patterns, desires, and choices that may have been affecting your daily life.

Tapovan Tamas provides a variety of holistic healing modalities, including Qi gong, transcendental breathwork, classical pranayama, yoga, Ayurvedic and deep tissue massage, as well as traditional practices like temazcal (sweat lodge) and ice baths. These offerings are designed to enhance and elevate your overall retreat experience.

Their retreat is often described as a personal reset, leaving participants feeling more alert, open, joyful, and lighter. It frequently leads to transformative life experiences, accompanied by fresh personal insights that pave the way for a happier and healthier life journey.

Important prerequisite

As a participant, you cannot be on neuro-psychiatric medications and serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), selective serotonin inhibitors (SSRIs), or monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) such as antidepressants or anticonvulsants medication. SSRIs, SNRIs and MAOIs, are not compatible with Ayahuasca and therefore dangerous.

Please read the frequently asked questions for more information and consult your doctor for further clarification.

What are the effects of Ayahuasca?

Drinking Ayahuasca can induce a range of effects - physically, visually, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. All of this will be discussed appropriately before and after the ceremony.

Physically:

It is not uncommon to vomit, have diarrhea, cry, yawn, laugh, shake, or feel temperature differences. All of these actions are potential manifestations of your physical and energetic bodies cleansing, detoxifying, removing blockages, and allowing for release.

Vomiting and diarrhea are referred to in medicine work as “purging,” as the body is getting rid of aspects of the self which no longer serve the highest good of the drinker.

Visually:

Visuals and internal visions are common after the ingestion of Ayahuasca and can play a role in the aspirant’s journey. However, they do not occur for everyone. These visions can offer profound wisdom and insight into the source of resistance, patterns, habits, ways of being, and blockages of the aspirant’s life. The visions may reveal past lives, early childhood trauma, psychic surgery, angels, passed loved ones, universal love, or an unlimited number of images.

Mentally:

The process of preparing for a ceremony, sitting in the ceremony, and processing the teachings after the ceremony can be mentally demanding. There can be many shifts in perception and perspective. You will have ample time to rest and recuperate during the retreat.

Spiritually:

Ayahuasca provides the opportunity for you to “do the work,” going deeper within to the source of your “problems” with the intention of opening to a greater wisdom of yourself and your world. It is a gateway to healing, facing past traumas, releasing suppressed emotions, feelings, and anything you store inside that no longer serves your highest self.

This medicine can offer powerful guidance for your personal and spiritual journey and will work within the body, in the parts where she feels needs to be opened, addressed, or healed.

Emotionally:

A range of emotions are common before, during, and after taking the medicine. It’s normal to feel apprehensive, nervous, excited, sad, calm, or confused, among many others. You will be partaking in integration circles the day after the ceremony to talk through your experiences, support, encourage, and help each other.

What are the medical prerequisites?

As healers in a healing profession, the safety and health of the participants in their Ayahuasca retreats is Tapovan Tamas’ utmost priority. Therefore, it is absolutely critical that all participants disclose any known medical conditions and/or the use of any prescription or non-prescription medication or supplements during their pre-registration process.

Participants are required to confirm that they do not have any serious medical condition, physical or mental, that could potentially be a complication in conjunction with the use of Ayahuasca.

If you do suffer from a medical condition listed in their medical guidelines, please inquire about it prior to completing your registration process. By attending one of their retreats, all participants agree that they are participating at their own risk and that Spanda Yoga, Kahare Shamanic Yoga Retreat do not accept liability for any accident or injury to their person.

The advice provided by Spanda Yoga is based upon their experienced understanding of the use of Ayahuasca and potential health complications, but please consult your doctor or other medical professionals for questions regarding medical conditions and medications.

It is important to use your doctor’s advice when coming off medications, especially antidepressants. All decisions on whether your health is suitable for inclusion in the retreats are made strictly with your safety in mind.

Policy regarding medications

All medications taken within the past 6 months must be disclosed prior to completing the registration. Failure to do so will put you and your health at risk. In general, one should not be taking any other substances or medications, including herbal medicines, when taking Ayahuasca or dieting other medicinal plants, both for your safety and to not interfere with the efficacy of the plants or their energies.

All prescription medications, certain supplements, and illegal drugs should be ceased at least two to eight weeks prior to drinking Ayahuasca, depending on the specific type of medication or supplement. Synthetic hormones taken for hypothyroidism are an exception.

You may continue to take your hypothyroid medication during your course of Ayahuasca but are still required to inform Tapovan Tamas that you are taking the medication. Many over-the-counter medications, such as antihistamines, require only 48 hours of non-use prior to Ayahuasca, although they still recommend ceasing them two weeks in advance.

Specific medications, such as MAOIs and SSRIs, pose substantial health complications in conjunction with Ayahuasca and therefore require a longer cessation period. Please consult the comprehensive list below for detailed descriptions of specific medications and the recommended cessation period.

And remember, always consult your doctor when ceasing any prescription medication. Some medications have moderate to serious withdrawal effects, so added time might be necessary to safely ween yourself off your medication(s).

When consulting your doctor, please inform them that you will be taking a reversible MAOI.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs): Cease four to six weeks prior

Ayahuasca is a very potent natural MAOI and should not be used in combination with other MAOIs. Combining MAOIs can lead to complications in the regulation of neurotransmitters and digestion, such as hypertensive crisis, convulsive seizures, fever, delirium, comatose, and circulatory collapse.

Withdrawal symptoms are possible when ceasing prescription MAOIs, so it is important to consult a doctor as to how to taper off one’s dosage. Why? Monoamine oxidase is an enzyme responsible for clearing certain neurotransmitter chemicals from the brain.

When the activity of this enzyme is inhibited, the brain has more norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine available to send important messages and regulate mood states. This enzyme is also important in the digestive process.

Medications:

  • Marplan (isocarboxazid)
  • Nardil (phenelzine)
  • Emsam
  • Eldepryl
  • Zelapar (selegiline)
  • Parnate (tranylcypromine)
  • Aurorix and Manerix (moclobemide)
  • Pirazidol (pirlindole)

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs): Cease six or eight weeks prior; abstain four weeks after

The combination of Ayahuasca (a MAOI), SSRIs, and SNRIs is potentially life-threatening. Any medication which has an effect on the serotonin system, such as SSRIs, can induce serotonin syndrome in conjunction with Ayahuasca.

It is extremely important that you give the medication enough time to leave your system and give yourself time to adjust to not being on your medication as side effects from stopping your medication may arise.

Prozac requires stoppage eight weeks prior to drinking Ayahuasca due to its longer half-life while all other SSRIs require six weeks.

Do not stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor first. Why? Ayahuasca is a MAOI which allows for certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, to become more available in the brain.

SSRIs inhibit the reuptake of serotonin. The combination of these two substances will cause excess and / or overload of serotonergic activity in the central nervous system and peripheral serotonin receptors.

Medications:

  • Celexa (citalopram)
  • Lexapro and Cipralex (escitalopram)
  • Luvox (fluvoxamine)
  • Paxil and Seroxat (paroxetine)
  • Prozac (fluoxetine)
  • Zoloft and Lustral (sertraline)

Other anti-depressants: Cease six weeks prior. Abstain 4 weeks after.

Anti-depressants other than SSRIs, such as…

  • Serotonin-norepinephrine inhibitors (SNRIs)
  • Serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitors (SARIs)
  • Norepinephrine inhibitors (NRIs)
  • Norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitors (NDRIs)
  • Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs)
  • Tetracyclic antidepressants (TeCAs)
  • Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressants (NaSSAs)
  • Serotonin modulator and stimulators (SMSs)

...can pose serious complications in conjunction with drinking Ayahuasca. If combined with a MAOI, one can have an overload of the neurotransmitter, leading to serious health complications.

Medications - SNRIs:

  • Pristiq (desvenlafaxine)
  • Cymbalta (duloxetine)
  • Fetzima (levomilnacipran)
  • Ixel and Savella (milnacipran)
  • Effexor (venlafaxine)

Medications - SARIs:

  • Axiomin and Etonin (etoperidone)
  • Serzone and Nefadar (nefazodone)
  • YM-992, YM-35,995 (lubazodone)
  • Desyrel (trazodone),

Medications - NRIs:

  • Strattera (atomoxetine)
  • Edronax (reboxetine)
  • Vivalan (viloxazine)

Medications - NDRIs:

  • Wellbutrin and Zyban (bupropion)

Medications - TCAs:

  • Elavil and Endep (amitriptyline)

  • Asendin (amoxapine)
  • Ludiomil (maprotiline)
  • Lumin, Bolvidon, Norval, Tolvon (mianserin)
  • Remeron (mirtazapine)

Medications - SMSs:

  • Viibryd (vilazodone)
  • Brintellix (vortioxetine)

Anti-depressant or other drug containing MAO inhibitors or SSRIs, i.e.:

  • Prozac
  • Seroxat
  • Zoloft
  • Effexor, Paxil, Welbutrin (bupropion) also sold as Zyban as aid therapy to the urge to smoke
  • Similar medication

Anti-stress medication such as:

  • Valium
  • Xanax
  • Similar medication

Antibiotic therapy may cause potentially adverse reactions with the use of Ayahuasca. Discontinue the use of this medication and any of the following for at least one week before and until one week after taking the Ayahuasca medicine:

  • Phenylalanine
  • Non-prescription drugs like antihistamine, systemic vase-constrictors or decongestants both natural (ephedrine) and synthetic formulations (pseudo-ephedrine and similar) normally used in case of cold and flu, asthma inhalers, or drugs with high content of caffeine

  • Neurological prescriptions like carbamazipine (a drug that eliminates seizures)
  • Sympathomimetic drugs (substances that mimic the effects of the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline) like amphetamine and tyrosine
  • Marijuana
  • Cocaine
  • Heroin
  • Crack
  • Mescaline or phenethylamines (homologues of amphetamines)

Central nervous system (CNS) depressants (and sleeping pills): Cease three to four weeks prior

Other anti-depressants:

  • Cease six weeks prior
  • Discontinue four weeks after

CNS depressants, such as certain anti-anxiety medications and sleeping aids, should not be used in conjunction with Ayahuasca due to serious health risks. The use of Ayahuasca can increase the depressant effects of CNS depressants leading to slower brain activity, heart rhythm, and respiration.

CNS depressants include benzodiazepines, sleep medications, and barbiturates. They have a shorter half-life and therefore can be ceased three weeks prior to drinking Ayahuasca. Dependency on CNS depressants can arise easily, so withdrawal symptoms may arise when ceasing your medication. Please consult your doctor for help.

Medications - Benzodiazepines:

  • Valium (diazepam)
  • Xanax (alpazolam)
  • Halcion (triazolam)
  • ProSom (estazolam)

Medications - Non-benzodiazepine sleep medications:

  • Ambien (zolpidem)
  • Lunesta (eszopiclone)
  • Sonata (zalepon)

Medications - Barbiturates:

  • Mebaral (mephobarbital)
  • Luminal sodium (phenobarbital)
  • Nembutal (pentobarbital)
  • Any other barbiturate

Anti-hypertensives (blood pressure medications): Cease two to six weeks prior, depending on the medication

There are many classes of anti-hypertensives, which lower blood pressure by different means. Among the most important and most widely used are thiazide diuretics, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, beta blockers, and angiotensin II receptor antagonists.

Always ask your doctor about coming off your medication, and please inform them that you will be taking a reversible MAOI.

Medical conditions

If you suffer from a particular medical condition that is not covered below, please send an inquiry prior to booking a retreat. Although Ayahuasca use under supervised conditions is generally considered safe, some medical conditions can have moderate to very serious complications with regards to the use of Ayahuasca.

If you have any condition in the kidney, liver, or heart, or other serious medical condition, or if you or an immediate family member has a history of seizures, you must inform Tapovan Tamas prior to booking a retreat to discuss your particular situation.

In every medical case, always discuss the use of a reversible MAOI with your doctor prior to booking.

Epilepsy / seizures

If you or an immediate family member has a history of epilepsy and / or seizures, you must inform Tapovan Tamas prior to booking a retreat. Use of Ayahuasca, if not properly managed and monitored, can induce a seizure if you have a prior family history of epilepsy.

Psychological conditions

People suffering from borderline disorders, bipolar disorders, psychosis, and schizophrenia are at psychological risk if they use Ayahuasca. At this time, serious borderline and bipolar cases, psychosis cases, and schizophrenia would exclude your participation from a retreat.

If you suffer from minor borderline or bipolar disorders and would like to discuss your specific case with Tapovan Tamas, please do so prior to booking a retreat.

In general, Ayahuasca has been shown to have positive general psychological effects on participants. They are monitoring the psychological well-being, depression, stress, and anxiety outcomes of Ayahuasca treatment.

If you suffer from depression, stress, OCD, or anxiety, please contact them about the specifics of your condition, including any prescribed medications, prior to booking a retreat.

Diabetes

People with diabetes have extra risk involved with the consumption of Ayahuasca. The use of the MAOIs present in Ayahuasca can alter blood sugar levels through hypoglycemic effects. MAOIs may change the amount of insulin or oral antidiabetic medication that you need.

People with severe unstable diabetes should not take Ayahuasca because of this risk. People with less severe diabetes should contact Tapovan Tamas prior to booking a retreat to discuss the particulars of the case, including the possibility of a modified diet.

Heart / cardiovascular conditions

If you have any chronic heart condition or high blood pressure, it is not advisable to participate in the drinking of Ayahuasca. The use of Ayahuasca can elevate the blood pressure and can pose serious and / or fatal risk to those with serious heart conditions or high blood pressure.

Having such serious conditions would exclude you from participating in one of the Ayahuasca retreats. Prospective guests with minor heart conditions are welcome to discuss the matter prior to booking a retreat.

Liver and kidney conditions

The use of Ayahuasca can be stressful for the liver and kidneys. Ayahuasca contains harmine and related alkaloids, which act as inhibitors of monoamine oxidase. This inhibition activity occurs in the liver and gastrointestinal tract.

If a participant has various monoamines still present in their system from the diet, environmental exposure, medical condition, or use of pharmaceutical or illicit drugs, these would accumulate in the presence of an MAOI and would add further stress for the liver and kidneys.

Hypothyroidism

If you have a hypothyroidism condition, it is generally safe to partake in the use of Ayahuasca. However, you must inform The Way Inn of your condition, so that they can closely monitor your dosage during your course of Ayahuasca.

You also may continue using your hypothyroid medication (synthetic hormones, such as synthroid) during your retreat experience without complication.

Illegal or recreational drugs - Stimulants, depressants, and psychoactives: Discontinue two weeks prior

The following illegal or recreational drugs should under no circumstances be combined with Ayahuasca:

  • Cocaine
  • Amphetamines and derivatives of amphetamines
  • MDMA (ecstasy)
  • MDA or its derivatives
  • Dextromethorphan (DXM)

The following pose a lesser risk but should also not be combined with Ayahuasca:

  • Opiates
  • Mescaline (any phenethylamine)
  • Barbiturates
  • Other psychoactive compounds

Herbal medicines and supplements: 48 hours prior

  • Betel
  • Boswellia
  • Carrot seed

  • Ephedra
  • Fennel seed
  • Fo-Ti
  • Ginseng
  • Horny goat weed
  • Kanna

  • Rhodiola rosea
  • Scotch broom
  • Siberian ginseng
  • Sinicuichi
  • Tumeric

  • Yohimbe

What happens during the ceremony?

Each ceremony has a standard structure rooted in the Amazonian tradition - the shaman preparing himself, the opening of the space, the blessing of the medicine, the cleansing of the participants, the creation of protection through prayers, setting intention, playing and singing the most amazing medicine songs all night, then closing the ceremony with the tobacco gratitude circle and the blessing of water.

Every ceremony is the same yet very different because separate things unfold and different emotions manifest each time.

That’s why it is crucial to work with qualified professionals! The shaman must have a great capacity to respond effectively and intuitively to whatever transpires during and after the ceremony and know how to navigate or interact with any kind of mental or emotional difficulty.

Every participant will get all the support they need to make sure that everybody settles back in safely after their journeys.

In Tapovan Tamas’ belief system, disease is literally dis-ease about your personal history, which creates pain and physical imbalances. Ayahuasca, tobacco, and other plant medicines help surface the roots of disease so unresolved traumas can be addressed consciously, leading to a lighter, healthier, and more joyful life.

Teacher plants, diet, and Eastern wisdom are capable of recontextualizing your experience of this existence. This work can treat a wide range of issues that may arise from being part of the Western world.

Ayahuasca is not a recreational drug. Tapovan Tamas utilizes this powerful plant medicine, ingested in the ceremony, with the intention to heal participants’ lives. That said, they do this work in a safe, gentle, and compassionate way.

Typically, seekers move from heavier experiences at first toward lighter, more ecstatic states as the number of ceremonies progress. Please remember that everyone is different and has their own process. Be strong during your retreat, go beyond your comfort zone, for it is there where true growth happens.

How and by whom is the Ayahuasca brew prepared?

The brew is made from the vine of cielo Ayahuasca and chacruna. Ivan, the shaman, prepares it himself with his teacher according to traditional methods, singing and praying over the medicine while boiling it for hours deep in the Peruvian jungle. It is a highly potent and very pure medicine that produces great results without exceptions.

How is the Ayahuasca dosage determined?

The shaman pours the dose that his spirit guides indicate. However, you can ask for a small dose to start with or a big one if you are a more experienced practitioner.

Tapovan Tamas always suggests starting slowly and feeling the medicine first, and once you’ve had the initial introduction, you are welcome to drink more according to your needs.

Ayahuasca is intelligent and it is almost impossible to “overdose.” That being said, it is ideal to find a healthy balance between a strong medicinal dose and an amount that allows the seeker to work consciously with the medicine.

How to set intention for the ceremony?

That is between you and the mother Ayahuasca. Tapovan Tamas will guide you on how to hold and communicate those intentions, as well as how to recognize when they are successfully manifested. You can express your intention as you hold the cup, right before you drink each time.

What are the wisdom teachings and integration circle?

Shamanic traditions differ greatly by region. However, these traditions all point to the same unified reality described in the world’s great wisdom traditions: The Vedas, Tantric Buddhism, Classical Tantra yoga, Christian Gnosticism, Sufism, and Native American teachings.

Tapovan Tamas shares what they have discovered from synthesizing these various traditions with you in an informal lecture format. The purpose of these talks is to share their yogic and shamanic belief systems, which help the mind to integrate the new realities encountered in plant medicine ceremonies.

Sharing your feelings, thoughts, doubts, and questions helps to put things into context, so a deep understanding of what took place and why it did so during the ceremonies will be explained.

Is there private consultation?

The Tapovan Tamas healing team is available to help you on your journey both in and after the ceremony. You can get personalized assistance if needed and gain insight into your experiences with one-on-one consultations with their team of healers.
