Location

Hiking the Pekoe Trail - Stages 7 and 8

The Stage 7 trail begins deep in Sri Lanka’s tea country in Kotagala. Along the way, you’ll encounter Chrysler’s Farm Tea Factory, a colonial-era tea factory built in 1870, as well as Singamalai Lake, which supplies all the drinking water for Hatton and its surrounding villages. This is a great spot for a picnic.

The Stage 8 trail begins in Norwood, the gateway to the Bogawantalawa Valley, which is also known as the ‘Golden Valley of Tea.’ On this walk, you’ll climb up towards a ridge that separates the Bogawantalawa and Maskeliya valleys, considered amongst of the most beautiful places in the tea country.

From the top of this ridge, zig zag your way to Norwood Estate and enjoy sweeping views of the Maskeliya side and catch a glimpse of Adam’s Peak from across the lake.

Things to do (optional)

Late-night wilderness walk with the resident naturalist at 21:00 (50 USD)

A special experience for night owls, this guided walk along tea estate routes takes place after dinner and presents a unique alternative to the daytime trails.

The acres of tea fields, rocky outcrops, and bordering forests take on a different look and feel as night falls over the hill country, and the many nocturnal animals in the area venture out looking for food, making it a hotspot for wildlife activity.

As the walk (approximately one and a half hours) starts at around 21:30, Teardrop Island recommends having an early dinner to give yourself enough time to relax before the walk.

This stroll is as secluded and silent as you’ll ever experience in the hills of Sri Lanka. On some nights, you’ll see the mist roll in, but most nights will have skies that are clear enough to gaze at the blanket of stars overhead.
