Monuments and attractions:

There are many ancient sites to visit in this green mountainous land that pours into the sea. Historic remains of towers, baths, and castles can still be seen there, plus some monuments from more recent history.

Syllas Cave

Considered one of the best preserved sites since the Roman era, this cave not far from the property and next to the Church of Aghion Anargyron was where the Roman General Syllas cured the arthritis in his legs. There are intriguing ancient Greek inscriptions outside the cave that pay tribute to the Roman leaders of the time.

Venetian tower dwelling

Visit this well-preserved and lone Venetian tower that sits in the center of Rovies, an attractive seaside village. The tower, which is three floors high, was built in the 13th century. Today it represents a kind of folklore museum containing old tools and antiques from the town.

Tower of Aidipsos

Right in this town, there are ruins of a Frankish tower that once housed Petronella Tokka, the former Baroness of Aidipsos and nearby Lichada.

Ancient acropolis of Oreoi

While not much are left of the walls and foundations of this acropolis of the ancient city of Oreoi, it might be worth a visit for the view. It lies just outside the little port of the modern town.

Crumbling walls and a vague outline of foundations are all that is left of the acropolis of the ancient city of Oreoi. They are located just outside the seaside harbor of Oreoi, representing all remains of this city founded by Pericles.

Roman baths of Gialtra

This little town, which isn't far from Aidipsos, also once had important thermal baths. Today, only bits remain of the ancient baths along the beach, although visitors can still dip into the thermal waters.

Cape Artemisio

Of great historic significance, Cape Artemisio is known for its treacherous waters that spelled the end of many sailors there. More importantly, it was where the Athenians won the battle against the Persians's second invasion, led by Xerxes I.

Sanctuary of Artemis Proseioas

Just outside the small village of Pefki on a hill, there are some ruins of an archaic temple that paid tribute to the goddess Artemis. It was probably built during the third or fourth century BCE, with local inscriptions referring to the dances and rituals that celebrated victory at the naval battle of nearby Artemisio.

Drosini Tower

In the village of Gouvies, the Drosini Tower is named after the last person to call it home, the poet Georgios Drosinis. It was built half a century before the poet was born by an Ottoman slave who won his freedom after designing it. Today the tower still remains well-preserved although renovations are needed.

Byzantine and medieval castle of Oreoi

Overlooking the peaceful seaside village of Oreoi, the remains of a once-grand castle stand sentinel. Built up during the period of Frankish rule, the castle was inhabited continuously throughout the Byzantine and medieval periods.

Further excavation throughout the area revealed traces of buildings dating back to the fourth and fifth centuries. Today, little remains, though the views over Oreoi and the sea make the journey there worthwhile.

Archaeological Museum of Aidipsos

This small yet interesting exhibit is housed in the same building as the public baths of the municipality. Some noteworthy artefacts include a marble depiction of Hercules and a Roman statue of the demigod. Marble columns from nearby Gialtra dating back to the fourth century are also available for viewing.

Museum of Natural History of Istieia

The home of Greece’s largest collection of stuffed birds as well as a large variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, rocks and minerals, fossils, and shells is this large and impressive museum in the northern town of Istieia.

The center aims to educate the public on the rich natural and geological history of the area as well as encourage both visitors and residents to take an active role in its preservation.

Beaches in Edipsos, Northern Evia:

Thermae Sylla Beach

Step into the clean waters of the Thermae Sylla Beach, easily accessed from the gorgeous deck right in front of the property. Being in a gulf and thanks to the thermal waters gushing into this body of water, the sea there remains warm practically all year round. This beach truly represents a very unique mix of sea and rich thermal waters, rarely found in the world.

Chronia beach

Approximately five kilometers north of Limni is the beach of Chronia. There lays this thin, yet clean strip of beach. Small pebbles and plenty of dried seaweed make up its surface, and though you won’t find any umbrellas for hire there, a couple of rooms and tavernas just beyond the beach provide basic amenities.

Kanatadika

The beautiful beach of Kanatadika is set apart by the beautiful shades of blue in its waters and its unique position, looking out towards both the mainland, the Pelion Peninsula, and the Aegean. The beach consists of smooth pebbles, and is backed by a few traditional seafood tavernas.

Lihadonisia

Known as the “Greek Seychelles,” the handful of small islets across from the seaside town of Lihada are a marine playground, particularly for those who come with their own boat. The popular beach of Agios Georgios features sun loungers and umbrellas as well as a beach bar.

It’s very popular with the young and gregarious, though if you’re looking for more secluded swimming, the other islets are all within swimming distance and feature extremely shallow waters.

Limni Beach

Conveniently located just outside the graphic seaside town it takes its name from, Limni Beach is unorganized and features clean water and pebbles both inside and outside of the sea. It can be busy during summertime, though its size wards off the feeling that it’s overcrowded.

Pefki

The popular beach of Pefki sits close to the northernmost point of Evia. It is a well-known resort, attracting families and becoming very popular with campers. It takes its name from the Greek word for pine tree, and indeed the trees tumble down mere meters from the beach.

Pefki is extremely popular during the summer and if you are looking for peace and quiet, it is best to visit during the off season.

Pyli

Aside from a small section of umbrellas and sun loungers, the beautiful beach of Pyli is unorganized and large enough to handle the crowds. Its shallow waters and sandy beach make it ideal for young children, though due to the fact that it faces the Aegean, it can be prone to strong northern winds.

Rovies Beach

You could be forgiven for believing you were on the shore of a Swiss lake rather than an Aegean island while relaxing on the peaceful and scenic beach of Rovies. Smooth pebbles and pine trees that practically overhang into the waters give this stretch of beach a unique feeling. The mountains behind and the mainland in the distance also add to the feeling of being anywhere but on an island.

Lihadas (Kavos Beach)

Evia’s westernmost beach looks across to the small islets of Lihadonisia and offers swimmers a shallow sandy beach. Though popular in itself, most people go there to catch the boat that makes runs among the small islands throughout the day.

Oreoi

Just left of the small harbor, in the picturesque seaside town of Oreoi, the eponymous beach features calm clear waters and fine sand. Tavernas and cafes are found just behind the beach.

Churches and monasteries:

Without a doubt, the Church of Agios Ioannis is spiritually the most important one there and is known for its healing powers. Yet, there are other very notable churches worth visiting too.

Church of Agios Ioannis (Saint John) the Russian

Lying less than an hour away from Thermae Sylla by car, this is one of the most famous churches on Evia in the village of Prokopi. Built in 1951, it honors a simple Christian man, Ioannis, who after fighting against the Turks in his native Russia, was captured, enslaved, and taken to the original Prokopi in Cappadocia, Asia Minor (Turkey).

Despite pressure and humiliation from Turkish leaders, Ioannis refused to convert to Islam, and his saintly behavior earned him the right to practice his Christianity. Following an illness, Ioannis passed away when he was forty years old and his body was buried by fellow Christians and placed in a marble tomb in 1730.

The site became known as a center for healing which now sees visits from thousands of all faiths. Ioannis' remains were eventually taken by Christian refugees during the great population exchange of 1924, who moved from the old Prokopi to the new one.

A large church was built in his honor in 1951 and remains a highly visited site among Orthodox Christians as well as a frequent meeting place of Orthodox leaders and clergy.

Monastery of Osios David Rovion

At the foot of Mount Kavalaris, the all-male monastery of Osios David Rovion in Roviews was established in the 16th century and later destroyed by the Ottomans during the Greek revolution. It was rebuilt in 1877, and includes catacombs as well as a small chapel built in a small cave not far off.

Monastery of Agios Georgios Ilion

This picturesque monastery and church complex sits in a lofty spot between the mountains of Telethrio and Gymno. Built in 1834, the monastery was originally home to monks. This changed in 1970, when it became a women’s monastery.

Aside from offering spectacular views out to the mountains and sea beyond, the original structure is believed to have been built in 1259 atop ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo.

Today, visitors can walk the catacombs beneath, some of which have never been explored.

Cave of Agios Christodoulos

Though not an official “church,” the small altar set in the cave of St. Chirstodoulos honours the saint who sought refuge and became a hermit within it during the 10th century. It is located just outside the seaside town of Limni.

Daily excursions

Thermae Sylla can organize for you day trips:

  • Το Meteora - which UNESCO has declared as "Listed and protected monument of humanity" with its huge rocks, famous monasteries perched above them, nestled in caves and peaks, from the 11th century
  • To Delphi - gather historical and archaeological interest in the region; the "navel of the Earth," for the ancients, is a unique location with wild and imposing grandeur; the site of the sacred oracle of Delphi revealed by the excavations that started the French Archaeological School in 1860
  • To Athens - visit to the Acropolis Museum and the Archaeological Museum of Athens

Activities In Edipsos, Northern Evia

A wide range of activities ranging from hiking and diving to birdwatching and horse riding are available in this region. Get ready to discover the very best of Northern Evia!

Cycling

Northern Evia’s thick pine forests and easy-going coastal roads provide cyclists with endless opportunities to enjoy the region from a different angle. The northwestern section of the area is particularly picturesque and bike rental is easy to find around the health-inclined resort of Aidipsos.

Diving

Conveniently located along the beach of Aidipsos, the experts at Diving Travel can help divers get the certification they need and enjoy diving in the rich and beautiful waters of northern Evia. Equipment rental is also available there.

Alternatively, with its home base adjacent from what are referred to as the Greek “Seychelles,” Lichadonisia Diving Center in Agios Giorgios is a one-stop place for learning everything there is to know about diving, renting equipment, or finding guides to the best dive sites throughout northern Evia.

Windsurfing

Though not as popular as southern Evia, the coastal towns of Limni and Kanatadika can be great places to enjoy the sport when there is enough wind. Finding a breeze will certainly not be an issue in the northern town of Pefki, where you can expect a decent wind year-round. You must actually be careful in August due to the severity of the northern Meltemi winds which pelt the area during this time.

Canyoning

The Gorge of Nileas and the river by the same name provide a unique and intriguing landscape for canyoning and hiking enthusiasts. Go on this two-hour journey starting from the long descent into the gorge in the area of Paliovrisi.

While the river cuts through the rock of the gorge until it exits at Kriovrisi along the sea, most walkers head northward towards the village of Kerasia. Swimming is unavoidable in some areas and canyoners must cross through narrow passes and caves along the way.

Hiking

Northern Evia’s dense forests and mountain ranges provide walkers with plenty of routes which will take them through some of the island’s most picturesque corners. You can hike from Agios to Prokopi in six and a half hours, from Drymonas Falls to Mount Ksiron in three and a half hours, and from Mnimeio to Mount Pyksarias in six and a half hours.

Other hiking areas include the Nileas Gorge, Kastaniotissa, Mount Telethrio, and many others.

Horseback riding

Surrounded by the rich forests of the Telethrio Mountain Range, the Petalo Horse Riding Center invites equestrian experts and novices to explore the beauty of northern Evia atop one of nature’s most majestic creatures.

The seven beautiful horses of Petalo provide riding opportunities for all ages and abilities within the forests of Telethrio. Set on over 25,000 square meters of land, Petalo offers accommodation and dining as well, making it a destination in itself for all who desire a different kind of vacation.

Alternatively, just south of the northern town of Istiea, the small village of Kamartirades is home to one of Evia’s prime horse riding destinations. One of 13 horses will take you on an unforgettable journey through northern Evia’s lush forests and winding rivers.

Bird watching

Northern Evia’s diverse landscape of open meadows, mountain ranges, wetlands, and rocky seaside cliffs provide a welcome variety to several types of birds. The two main areas of interest among bird watchers are the Kandili Mountains to the west and the wetlands and lagoons of Istiea in the northern part of the region.

The low mountains of Kandili are a favoured habitat among migratory birds and also serve as an invaluable breeding ground for large raptors. Cretzschmar’s Bunting (Emberiza caesia) can be seen within the wooded areas there.

Istiaea’s wetlands and the lagoons of Mikro and Megalo Livari provide safe shelter to the beautiful Mute Swan (Cignus olor) as well as a large number of seabirds that winter there.

The large variety of flora and fauna provide ample food for several bird species, though illegal building, hunting, and draining of some wetland areas has imposed a threat on the ecosystem and has prompted the area to become a candidate for SAC.
