Pizarra – Antequera

  • Distance: 56 kms
  • Terrain: Road undulating
  • Estimated time: 3 hrs

Pizarra is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 30 kilometers from Málaga. It is located in the center of the province and belongs to the comarca of Valle del Guadalhorce.

As you leave the first hotel, you will go through Pizarra and start your journey to Antequera following some parts of the Rio Guadalhorce and then onto many of the old roads that link up the market towns along the route including, Álora and Valle de Abdalajis. Eventually, you arrive in Antequera, which is known for its ancient burial mounds, including the Dolmen de Menga, Dolmen de Viera, and Tholos de El Romeral.

The Alcazaba of Antequera is a centuries-old Moorish fortress. The vast nature preserve of Torcal de Antequera has dramatic limestone tower rock formations. Overlooking the town, Peña de los Enamorados is a distinctive, face-shaped mountain, which you see on the approach from the west of the city on your bikes.

Antequera – Granada

  • Distance: 80 kms
  • Terrain: Road undulating
  • Estimated time: 5 hrs

Along the Route on today's travels you will pass many small market villages among them Loja and Huetor Tajar.

Loja is situated at the western limit of the province of Granada. It is surrounded by the so-called Sierra de Loja, of which the highest peak, Sierra Gorda, stands 1,671 meters above sea level.

Loja has sometimes been identified with the ancient Ilipula, or with the Lacibi (Lacibis) of Pliny and Ptolemy. It is unknown when Loja was first captured by the Moors; most likely this happened in the 8th century. it was captured by the Christians in 1486, during the Reconquista. Isabella I of Castile called it the "flower among thorns".

There are some lovely Tapas bars and rolling roads which lead to some stunning vistas in this part of Andalusia. A few kilometers out of Loja you roll into Huétor Tájar, It is situated 43 km west of the city of Granada. Huétor-Tájar lies within the fertile Genil River valley. The main source of income is the asparagus culture and its commercialization. It’s a very quiet village and sometimes where you shall stop for the evening.

Granada - Alhambra Visit

  • Distance: 28.9 kms
  • Terrain: Road climbing (Altitude 2,600 m)
  • Estimated time: 2.5 - 4 hrs

Granada Is the capital city of the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of four rivers, the Darro, the Genil, the Monachil, and the Beiro. Ascribed to the Vega de Granada comarca, the city sits at an average elevation of 738 m (2,421 ft) above sea level, yet is only one hour by car from the Mediterranean coast, the Costa Tropical. Nearby is the Sierra Nevada Ski Station, which makes it one of the most beautiful places to cycle.

The area was settled in ancient times by Iberians, Romans, and Visigoths. The current settlement became a major city of Al-Andalus in the 11th century during the Zirid Taifa of Granada. In the 13th century it became the capital of the Emirate of Granada under Nasrid rule, the last Muslim-ruled state in the Iberian Peninsula. Granada was conquered in 1492 by the Catholic Monarchs and progressively transformed into a Christian city over the course of the 16th century.

The Alhambra, a medieval Nasrid citadel and palace, is located in Granada. It is one of the most famous monuments of Islamic architecture. Known to Westerners as the “Alhambra Palace” and is one of the most visited tourist sites in Spain. Islamic-period influence and Moorish architecture are also preserved in the Albaicín neighborhood and other medieval monuments in the city.

The city of Granada sits on the Vega de Granada, one of the depressions or plains located within the Baetic mountain ranges, continued to the west by those of Archidona and Antequera and to the East by those of Guadix, Baza, and Huéscar.

The fertile soil of the Vega, apt for agriculture, is irrigated by the water streams originating in the Sierra Nevada, as well as minor secondary ranges, all drained by the catchment basin of the Genil River that cuts across the city center following an east-to-west direction.

The Monachil, a left-bank tributary of the former, also passes through the city, discharging into the Genil to the west of the city center. Sometimes we either cycle up and through Monachil or Pinos Genil this is weather dependent due to the high mountains you are dedicated to by the 3500 m high mountains and micro-climate above.

It is our pleasure to offer the Alhambra Palace guided tour as part of your experience in Granada.

Guadix

  • Distance: 62.7 kms
  • Terrain: Road undulating
  • Estimated time: 4:30 hrs

You shall spend almost two days here and in the surrounding area. Interestingly there is evidence of human settlement in the area surrounding Guadix going back to at least the Bronze Age.

By the end of the 19th century, Guadix had been famous for its cutlery; but its newer manufactures (chiefly earthenware, hempen goods, and hats) did not contribute to the city's economy significantly. Trade of wool, cotton, flax, corn, and liqueurs took place in the city. The warm mineral springs of Cortes y Graena, once commonly frequented during the summer, are located roughly 10 kilometers west of Guadix.

The novelist Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, author of El sombrero de tres picos, was born in Guadix in 1833.

Currently, Guadix is a center of production of fruit (strawberries), cereals, and vegetables.

The Hoya Basin has been subject to erosion due to the presence of small rivers in the surrounding elevations, which have given the area its characteristic landscape of gullies and Badlands. The sediments of the rivers Fardes and Guadix have turned the region into a fertile, then irrigated area, where the use of the land ranges from the cultivation of fruit trees, where peach cultivation abounds, to forestry, in particular that of poplar groves, as well as the sowing of cereals, leguminous plants, and vegetables.

This area, in my opinion, is one of the least known but most stunning vistas at any time of the day. While meandering along on your bike you can take in the highest peaks (3500 m) of the Sierra Nevada at your one side, the desert-like planes in front of you, and lush vegetation and agriculture to your other side, these are views seldom seen.

Caminito de Rey and Alora

  • Distance: 4.5 kms walking
  • Terrain: Path / gravel / stairs / tarmac
  • Estimated time: 2:30 hrs

El Caminito del Rey (The King's Little Path) is a walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro, near Ardales in the province of Málaga, Spain. Its name derives from the original name of Camino del Rey (King's Pathway), abbreviated locally to el caminito. The walkway was constructed in the early 20th century.

The walkway was built to provide workers at the hydroelectric power plants at Chorro Falls and Gaitanejo Falls with a means to cross between them, to provide for the transport of materials, and to help facilitate inspection and maintenance of the channel. The construction began in 1901 and was finished in 1905.

King Alfonso XIII crossed the walkway in 1921 for the inauguration of the dam Conde del Guadalhorce, and it became known by its present name. Toro Blanco’s Guided Cycling team feels this is a must-see before you leave, so you will be guided through the stunning walkway with your eyes filled with different scenes and viewpoints every few minutes. This will take your breath away.

The nearest town to El Caminito is Álora which is Located some 40 km from Málaga, on the right bank of the river Guadalhorce and on the Córdoba-Málaga railway, within the comarca of Valle del Guadalhorce. It is a typical pueblo blanco, a whitewashed village nestled between three rocky spurs topped by the ruins of the castle, you may cycle around and up to El Caminito de Rey on the last day, time permitting of course.
