You will stay in the home of Bert and Grietje, the retreat supervisors. The house is in a unique and beautiful location, in the middle of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park, less than an hour and a half drive from Málaga international airport. The house is surrounded by green forests, a natural river, and mountain bike and hiking trails that start from the front door. You breathe fresh air here and hear nothing but the birds, the water, and the wind through the trees. It is a perfect place to relax, recharge, and exercise in nature.

The house is a spacious farmhouse. 10 guests can be accommodated here. In addition to 3 bedrooms in the large accommodation, there is a small accommodation 2 meters away with another 2 bedrooms, a kitchenette and a bathroom. The main location has a spacious kitchen where you can cook together with all the necessities needed for this. There is also a living area here, including a fireplace and dining room. Because you are in a nature reserve, the internet and telephone reception is not always good. In the house itself you have coverage with most providers, but if you are in the reserve itself, this varies greatly.

There are several room types available with two large shared bathrooms with toilet, shower, and bath. The living room has a large fireplace, comfortable reading sofas, board games, and a library. The communal kitchen is filled to the brim with delicious vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts, and herbs, which everyone can use. You can also take a walk through the garden where, depending on the season, you can find figs, mulberries, walnuts, almonds, olives, and various herbs. For breakfast you are free to grab whatever you fancy; You prepare and eat the other (mostly vegetarian) meals together as a group.

The homely, personal atmosphere of the yoga and activity weeks is unique. Many of the participants come alone, but since you have small groups (max. 10 participants), it is always easy to get to know the other participants. But even if you come with a group, the shared living room and the large terrace provide plenty of opportunity to socialize together. But on the other hand, there is enough space in and around the house where you can retreat alone if you wish. It is the optimal setting to fully enjoy exercise in the outdoors in combination with healthy food, conviviality, and a conscious lifestyle.

Program

The daily schedule is approximately the same every day during this mountain bike holiday in Spain.

The group will start early every day with breakfast where they will also prepare a packed lunch. It is possible to participate in a yoga class in advance (optional). Then the group will prepare the bikes and leave for the starting point of the route. After enjoying an hour or two on the bike, the group will take a lunch break in a village or the countryside. You can of course also choose to order something tasty yourself on a terrace, but this will be at your own expense. A fun fact is that a cup of coffee costs 1 euro in the small villages.

After lunch, the group will get back on the bike for part 2 and pedal for many more kilometers. Tired and satisfied, the group then drives back home and, after a wonderful shower, prepares and enjoys the food together.

In the evening, the games are ready in the living room, but you can also opt for relaxing time in front of the fireplace (when it is a bit colder) or somewhere outside on the property when the weather is nice. You have plenty of space to do your own thing.

Day trips

During the tours of the mountain bike holiday in Spain, Van Dam Outdoor takes you through various natural environments (forests, orchards, along rock walls, vast plains, etc.). All routes are in and around the extensive Sierra de las Nieves nature reserve. This area offers numerous "beginner" and advanced routes. Depending on the level of the group, a great diversity of routes will be chosen. All routes go through nature, so the participants will avoid asphalt roads. You will only use this for small pieces of connection. Ultimately, the participants cycle for about 5 hours every day with many meters of elevation gain. (PS: taking a day of rest or doing something else is always possible).

Guided trip

The tours are with an experienced instructor. If there is a large difference in level in the group, it will be split into 2 groups.

Routes

  • Riding time: approx. 5 hours per day
  • Terrain: Trails

Simple route

A characteristic of a somewhat simpler route is that the paths on which you cycle are wide. You can cycle here with two people next to each other. The slopes are a fun challenge because the smallest resistance can be used, but you will always reach the top. Along the way, you can take many small breaks where you can enjoy the beautiful views, such as waterfalls, rock formations, views, etc. Then the descents also take a wide path, and they will take this down with you in a controlled manner. An example of a route that is accessible to everyone is the wide cycle route to Puerto de las Muyer.

Advanced route

A characteristic of a very advanced route is that a large part of your paths will be single-track, where you will encounter rocks and steep descents. You must already have considerable steering talent to be able to take these paths. The descents and climbs are very technical and involve a large number of elevation meters. An example of this is the route that eventually ends at El Chorro with kilometers of single track.

Average route

There are also plenty of challenging routes for the average rider who enjoys cycling in the Netherlands. These routes contain both, easy parts (to take a break) and advanced parts. Every day, you cycle a beautiful route with a large number of elevation meters. And know that one kilometer here is approximately equal to double that in the Netherlands, so you can have fun. An example of this is a round that you can make from the retreat's location to Ardales (approximately 35 km).

Rent or bring a mountain bike

The mountain bikes for rent are suitable for the terrain and have been approved by Bert. You can choose between a hardtail (37.50 euros per day), a full suspension MTB (47.50 euros per day), or an electric MTB (57.50 euros per day).

Of course, you can always bring your own bike to this mountain bike holiday. You can then deliver your bicycle to the special baggage area next to the check-in desks. It is very important that you deflate your tires and transport the bicycle in special mountain bike cases to prevent damage. You do not have to purchase these suitcases yourself, but can be rented from sport rental (60 euros per ten days, so that you have time to pack and unpack it at home). The suitcase will then be delivered to your home and you can pick it up from return to sender at your home address.

Food

During this week you can enjoy daily vegetarian breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Snacks are also provided.

There are many myths and fables about nutrition: Are carbohydrates good or bad for you? Is fat really as unhealthy as it is claimed to be? Is sugar now the newest drug? You will receive help to achieve a healthy relationship with food through the use of pure unprocessed products. The 3 balanced meals are included.

It is good to know that the evening meal is prepared together with the guests. Van Dam Outdoor believes that this creates a feeling of living/enjoying TOGETHER. And living/enjoying/sporting TOGETHER occupies an important place in their vision.
