Recognized by many as one of the most beautiful trekking routes in the world, the Inca Trail is perfect for those who enjoy long treks and dare to walk in the footsteps of Peruvian ancestors.
You will camp for three nights on the Inca Trail. The toilet facilities along the Inca Trail to Machupicchu have been improved both in infrastructure and in quantity and quality along the route, so a portable chemical toilet is not necessary for Wari Adventures due to sanitation issues with the staff in charge.
Along Inca Trail's 44 kilometers (27 miles), you will discover the most beautiful landscapes, enigmatic mountains, glaciers, and inter-Andean valleys on this fantastic route to Machu Picchu. Likewise, food is one of Wari Adventures' priorities, so they offer healthy and highly nutritious food, considering your energy requirements for the journey. The lunches will be prepared by a chef who is specialized in traditional dishes from the Cusco region, prepared with organic produce grown on organic farms, for a wholesome culinary experience.
They also offer flexibility in the schedule during the tour to give you greater freedom. You will walk in small groups of people, which will make your experience more intimate, and you will take away wonderful memories of the Inca Trail. Wari Tours is an indigenous-led and official tour operator of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. The briefing before your trip will be virtual, through the Zoom or Meet platform, under coordination with Wari Adventures.
The itinerary provided here is subject to change without notice, depending on factors such as strikes, weather conditions, roadblocks, or other situations beyond Wari Adventures' control. They remain committed to following this itinerary as accurately as possible.
To begin this adventure, you will meet at your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley of the Incas, at 5:00 a.m. First, you will stop at the organic farm in Urubamba to enjoy a healthy breakfast before starting the Inca Trail. Here, you will meet the trekking team that will accompany you throughout your journey (the cooks, driver, and indigenous porters) and you will have a little introduction ceremony to get to know each other better.
Then you will head to Piskacucho (2720 meters above sea level or 8923 feet) or kilometer 82 in your private transportation, where you will pass the first Inca Trail control checkpoint, crossing a suspension bridge that will lead you to the other side of the Urubamba River and start walking with a gentle ascent. You will have three hours of relatively flat terrain as you advance alongside the river, where your reward will be the magnificent views of La Veronica Mountain (5,750 meters). The hike passes through a forest of giant cacti.
When you reach Miskay, you will ascend gradually to the Willkaraccay Ruins, which are located well above the mouth of the Cusichaka stream, as well as in front of Llactapata (Terrace Village), an Inca village. After a detailed explanation of the Willkaraccay Ruins, you will have time for lunch and restore your energy. You will walk for approximately another hour and a half to reach the community of Wayllabamba, where you will spend your first night.
The second day is your biggest challenge, the highest climb of your trek. You will leave after a nutritious breakfast and start your hike to get to Ayapata, which will take you approximately one hour, crossing beautiful high Andean forests on your way. This Inca Trail trek becomes more strenuous as it gains elevation, but its reward will be the spectacular views of the mountains and the ancient Inca stone staircase, surrounded by impressive snow-capped peaks such as Apu Huayanay. You will continue walking for two or three hours to reach Llulluchapampa, where you will have lunch.
During the walk, you may see some species of birds, such as hummingbirds, hawks, and eagles, or, perhaps, you could see the king of the Andean heights, the condor, so greatly respected and revered by the people from the Andes. Soon, you will reach a beautiful cloud forest or polylepis forest (small Andean forests of queuña and chachacomo trees) and treeless grasslands in the puna ecoregion, which serve as a habitat for deer and pumas.
You will continue your route ascending to the highest point of the Inca Trail - Warmiwañusca (4200 meters or 13,850 feet), where you will stop for a small ceremony to give thanks to the protective mountains of the indigenous inhabitants of the area, and then descend for an hour or two to camp at Paccaymayo Alto, along a trail paved by the ancient inhabitants, the Incas.
After breakfast, you will start the third day of trekking. It will take you approximately one hour to get from the Pacaymayo Alto campsite to Runcuracay, which is a ruin or Tambo del Inca where the chaskis used to rest, a guard post, lookout point, or ritual building and you will be able to see it from the top of the trail. You will continue ascending until you reach the second highest pass, called Runcuracay (3950 meters or 12,959 feet), from where you will have a fantastic panoramic view of the magnificent cloud forest.
You will then descend to the Sayaqmarca Ruins, the place of military administration of the Incas. You will continue descending to a small Inca construction called Conchamarqa surrounded by Andean or native forests. From here onward, the route will be truly unforgettable because of the beauty of its landscapes and the authenticity of the path. You will pass through Chakicocha until you reach Phuyupatamarka, where you will have lunch and see majestic panoramic views.
After lunch, you will begin the descent along a steep path until reaching the wonderful Intipata Ruins; agricultural terraces to cultivate Andean products, and enjoy the fantastic view of the Urubamba River. You will then continue to the campsite located in Wiñaywayna. You will visit the Wiñaywayna Ruins, where you will enjoy the sunset, a truly magical moment, as the natural beauty of the scenery will fill you with many emotions. You will have a special dinner with the team on the trek to celebrate the adventure on the route.
On this day, you will wake up very early, at around 3:00 a.m. The chef prepares a healthy breakfast before you hit the trail again, after which you will head toward the checkpoint, where you will wait your turn to start walking over to the exclusive sun gate, also called Intipunku. Here, you will witness the first rays of the sun while having breakfast. Depending on the allocation of the campsite, you will either camp at Phuyupatamarka or Wiñaywayna and this means the time you arrive at the Sun Gate will vary.
Then, you will head towards the iconic Sanctuary or Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu. There will be plenty of time to explore the complex, and the explanations provided by the guide will make you really feel the profound connection and the harmonious way it was built around nature. It was worth your four days of adventure and effort. Finally, you will take the bus from Machu Picchu to Aguas Calientes to have the last lunch with your guide, then you will take the train back from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Private transportation will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel.
Tourist ticket to the Inca Trail and Machupicchu. This ticket will be given on the first day of the trek and used on the way to Machupicchu.
Alfredo developed a special interest in exploring the mountains, learning as much as he could about the native plants, animals, and local customs. He loves learning about the plants that local people use to make medicines, shampoos, and dyes for textiles. His story begins a long time ago with a dream of visiting Machu Picchu from a different perspective riding Peruvian horses and hiking through Andean communities.
You will be served all meals on the Inca Trail trek included in the price. You will have a memorable dining experience while you are on the Inca Trail with Wari Adventures. They strive to provide you with healthy and sustainable food at every single meal. The products are grown on an organic farm.
