Early in the morning at the agreed time, Peru Hike will pick you up from your hotels and transfer you to the train station of Poroy. The train leaves at 8:25 a.m. towards Aguas Calientes, a town close to the Sanctuary of Machu Picchu. The train ride to Machu Picchu is one of the most beautiful journeys that visitors can experience in the country. The trip offers great natural, so many staggering views of the Andes, and a jungle atmosphere after descending to the 2040 meters.
After approximately four hours, you will have arrived in Aguas Calientes, where your guide will welcome you and take you (on foot, no taxis in this town) to your hotel. At approximately 1:30 p.m., you will enjoy a delicious lunch in one of the best restaurants in Aguas Calientes. After that, you will have free time to relax and explore by your own this small town.
The two-day tour in Machu Picchu has allowed you to try the local natural hot springs in Aguas Calientes. So you can feel very relaxed for your next day when visiting Machu Picchu. At 7:00 p.m., you will enjoy a delicious dinner at which you receive a briefing with the guide who will be responsible for the tour to Machupicchu’s citadel.
In order to enjoy a peaceful atmosphere in Machu Picchu, it is advisable to go there early in the morning. Therefore, you will leave at 5:30 a.m. after breakfast. Your guide will take you to the local bus station to catch the bus that goes up to the ruins of Machu Picchu. The bus ride to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu lasts around 25 minutes, and it follows a steep winding path, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains.
Upon your arrival, your guide will show you the most important sectors of this incredible Inca City: the great Intiwatana (solar clock), the Sun Temple, the urban sector, and the agricultural sector. Machu Picchu was long thought to be legendary. Then in 1911, the explorer Hiram Bingham stumbled upon its remains. Machu Picchu stands 2,430 meters above sea level, in the middle of a tropical mountain forest, in an extraordinarily beautiful setting.
It was probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire at its height; its giant walls, terraces, and ramps seem as if they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. On the eastern slopes of the Andes, the natural setting encompasses the upper Amazon basin with its rich diversity of flora and fauna. The guided tour in Machu Picchu will last about two hours, and afterward, you will have free time to explore the ruins on your own. If you wish, you might climb Huayna Picchu Mountain, the huge mountain that appears in the background in every classic picture of Machu Picchu.
It takes about one hour or so to get to the top, following very steep stairs, though is a little challenging, at the top, you will be rewarded with one of the most impressive views in your lifetime. Later on, you will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes, where you will have time for lunch and explore the many craft shops in Aguas Calientes. At Aguas Calientes, if you wish, you can go to relax in the thermal baths. The hot springs are located in the village’s upper section; visitors may ask their local guide to get there. Finally, at around 4:00 p.m., you take the train back to Cusco’s city, arriving there after nightfall.
All information meetings are held in your hotel at 6:00 p.m., one night before the tour begins. If you cannot attend, you must coordinate another time at the Peru Hike offices. These meetings last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and there, you will be given a small duffel bag, in which you will put all the belongings you intend to bring on the trek that will not be in your day pack.
During the travel, your main luggage can be stored at the office (you can organize a briefing day or by email) or at your hotel, both free of charge. Any equipment that you are not going to need on the trek can be stored safely in your hotel. Nearly every hotel will provide this service. Do not leave items of value with your bags; please put them in the hotel safe and obtain an itemized receipt (in the unlikely case of theft, many insurance companies require that you have a copy of the receipt itemizing all the items). Best put items such as credit cards inside a sealed, signed envelope for extra peace of mind.
Peru Hike can pick you up from your hotel, as long as it is in the Historic Center of Cusco. The pickup time will be coordinated with your guide in the briefing. The pickup time may vary between 30 and 45 minutes due to traffic. Cusco is a very old city, therefore, it has many narrow cobbled streets. Some hotels and Airbnbs may be located on streets without access to cars or on long, steep slopes, making it difficult to transport luggage. They strongly recommend that you book accommodation with good access.
Returning from Machu Picchu requires quite a bit of logistics, but everything is included in the price. In Machu Picchu, you will board a bus that will take you for 25 minutes to the small city of Aguas Calientes. The buses are boarded according to your arrival. In Aguas Calientes, you will board a train to Ollantaytambo or Cusco. Your guide will give you the train tickets where the boarding time will be shown. Make sure you are on the platform 30 minutes early.
The train from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo takes two hours. Once you arrive at the station, your representative, identified with the Peru Hike clothing, will be waiting to transfer you to Plaza San Francisco, in Cusco. The trip from Ollantaytambo to Plaza San Francisco takes two hours. In San Francisco, depending on your hotel’s location, they will take you to a smaller car from their company (Hyundai H1) to transfer you faster to your hotel in Cusco.
Group tours are made up of different types of people. Physical conditions and ages can vary. By agreeing to be part of a group tour, you also accept that some people may be faster or slower than you. Therefore, each person can go at their own pace on the route. It may be the case that a group wishes to modify the tour; however, it will be the guide who decides, after consulting with all the participants, if said modifications can be made.
Strikes and demonstrations are usually frequent in Peru and this may interrupt some of their tours. Roads can be blocked and train tracks can be taken over. However, they will try to keep your excursion as planned, even if it means leaving the night before the scheduled date. Under these circumstances, tours may also be canceled. In case of changes or cancellations, all situations will be coordinated with you by their operations department. Your safety is their highest priority and their decisions will be made to protect it.
You will be served daily meals included in the price.
