Program

What Autumn in Lapland Looks Like

August and September are the best months to hike in Finnish Lapland. The landscape comes alive with vibrant ruska colours—fiery reds, golden yellows, and deep earthy browns. Reindeer roam freely, and ptarmigans hide among the rocky terrain. At night, if the sky is clear, the Northern Lights may dance above your tent.

Wild Camping With Quality Gear

You’ll carry your personal clothing and camping essentials in your own backpack. Pihka Outdoors provides high-quality tents, warm sleeping bags, insulated sleeping pads, stoves, and all other necessary equipment for the tour. Even when the nights get chilly, you’ll stay warm and comfortable in your sleeping bag. Campsites are carefully chosen for their natural beauty—often by rivers, on fell slopes, or in open tundra with panoramic views.

Drinking water is collected from clear Arctic streams, and expedition meals are cooked at camp using gas stoves under the open sky. Wilderness huts can be found along the route, but they are used only in emergencies. Pihka Outdoors aims to give you a true wilderness hiking experience in Lapland—away from the crowds and fully immersed in nature.

Physical Level and Packing a Backpack

No previous trekking experience is required for this adventure, but you should have good overall fitness. Each day includes 10–15 km of hiking while carrying a backpack weighing approximately 15–25 kg. Pihka Outdoors provides a detailed packing list, a video meeting, and a group chat to help you prepare. Expect varied weather—from sunshine to rain—with temperatures between +5 °C and +15 °C.

Day 2

After a good breakfast, you pack the van and start driving north to Kilpisjärvi (3.5 hours). This is where the Three Borders Wilderness Hike begins, as you set out towards the majestic mountains and hills. The trek starts along marked trails through the Malla Strict Nature Reserve. Along the way, you’ll see unique protected vegetation found only in this region and remnants from World War II among the fells. After hiking, you reach the three-country cairn where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. Set up tents nearby (two persons per tent) and enjoy your evening meal.

  • Distance: 10–15 km / 6–9 miles

Day 3

The second hiking day takes you into Norway. Begin the day by trekking across vast, open wilderness as the trail ascends towards the mountains. Admire the impressive Mount Barras towering above the landscape and breathe in some of the purest air in the world. You’ll camp in a remote valley with stunning mountain views along the Sweden–Norway border.

  • Distance: 12–15 km / 7–9 miles

Day 4

For the next two days, you hike through Sweden. Early in the morning, cross the Swedish border and trek alongside Mount Pältsa. Enjoy the abundance of crystal-clear arctic rivers and streams where you can refill your bottles, and take in the beautiful rapids and waterfalls. Overnight in tents.

  • Distance: 10–15 km / 6–9 miles

Day 5

Continue hiking over rolling fells and small mountains to reach Lake Kilpisjärvi in Finland once more. The trail offers a mix of climbs and descents, rewarded by spectacular views of the remote wilderness. You may spot reindeer, wolverines, or even the elusive arctic fox. Set up your final camp near the three-country cairn and soak in the beauty of the open arctic landscape.

  • Distance: 10–15 km / 6–9 miles

Day 6

The final day of the Three Borders Hike. Hike back to civilisation in Kilpisjärvi. After approximately 12 km, you’ll reach your starting point, pack the car, and drive back to Ylläs (3.5 hours). Check into the same hotel, enjoy a good wash, and relax in a traditional Finnish sauna. End the trip with a well-earned dinner and maybe start planning your next adventure.

  • Distance: 12 km / 7 miles

Day 7

After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye until next time. Transport to the airport or your next destination is at your own expense.
