Program
Day 1: Arusha - Longido (230 km / 143 mi)
Just outside of Arusha, the route turns onto a good gravel road. This road passes the Monduli Forest Reserve and a few local villages. Further on, it becomes less densely populated as the route continues onto a smaller road. As elevation increases, giraffes and some zebras can be spotted. This is Maasai land, and to the north, there is a view of their sacred Mount Gelai. The long dirt road ends at the asphalt road in Longido town.
Day 2: Longido - Marangu (210 km / 130 mi)
A dusty gravel road leads through a large wildlife management area until reaching the tarmac road that circles the mountain. This is the western side of Kilimanjaro, and the ride continues toward the northern part along the Kenyan border. The road is in good condition. Optionally, an off-road shortcut through the forest at the foot of the mountain can be taken.
Day 3: Marangu - Same (154 km / 96 mi)
After a short asphalt ride, the route enters the Pare Mountains. A dirt road leads around the back of the range and climbs up using a small track with spectacular views over Lake Jipe and the Kenyan side. For experienced riders, there is an optional single track through the forest.
Day 4: Same - Arusha (254 km / 158 mi)
Early morning departure is available for those who wish to visit Mkomazi National Park. This park receives few visitors and is less well-known than other parks in the country, yet it offers excellent wildlife viewing. Sightings of the Big Five within a short time are possible. In the afternoon, the ride returns to Arusha via the main road with a few off-road shortcuts.
Motorbikes
During this tour, you will ride a Kibo 250 cc.
Bike rental deposit
Bike rental and the deposit fee are included in the package, so customers do not need to arrange this themselves. However, the price does not cover any damage costs during the trip. If any parts are damaged and cannot be repaired on the spot, Zebra Trails will have them checked at a garage, and the cost will be confirmed after the trip.
Riding gear
Riding gear is not included, so customers will need to bring their own. A helmet is mandatory, and Zebra Trails strongly encourages riders to bring proper riding gear for safety, as you will be riding every day during the trip.
Clothing
Mandatory items include a helmet, motorcycle jacket with protection, gloves, strong motorcycle trousers with protection or separate knee armour, and sturdy high boots. Sunglasses, lip balm, sunscreen, and a helmet with a visor or dust-protective glasses are recommended.
Difficulty and off-road
Daily distances are not very long. There is enough time for photo opportunity stops on the route and for visits to villages. This tour is suitable for all healthy motorcyclists. You ride on asphalted main roads and frequently follow a variety of narrow routes off the beaten track. About a third of the route is on unpaved roads. These vary from hard-packed gravel roads to small dirt tracks in thick bush. The unpaved roads are not difficult, but Zebra Trails recommends having basic off-road skills.
Instructors
Joseph Madanji
Joseph began his career at Zebra Trails as a mechanic, boasting a diploma in Mechanical Engineering. His journey commenced when he purchased his first bike, a Kibo 150cc off-road version, igniting his passion for off-road exploration throughout Kenya. This newfound love for biking led him to his current role as our local Kenyan tour leader for motorbike adventures in Kenya and Kenya-Tanzania.
