Home to the mesmerizing Northern Lights, dramatic volcanic scenery, and breathtaking ice-capped mountains, there’s no surprise Iceland is on many travelers’ bucket list.
Offering a wealth of fantastic landscapes to explore, Iceland is one of the best places in the world to discover on foot. Its epic hiking trails visit stunning waterfalls, jagged glaciers, rumbling volcanoes, and mossy slopes.
Between multi-day trails and short treks, Iceland is a great choice for a hiking vacation. When you are not on the trails, relax your mind and body with yoga and meditation sessions.
The multi-day hikes range from moderate to extremely challenging so make sure to have the appropriate fitness level before embarking on such adventures.
The Laugavegur trek is a 4-day moderate trek, spanning over 34.1 miles (55 km). Well-signed and very popular, it’s Iceland’s most popular hiking trail, crossing black lava fields, colorful mountains, beautiful meadows, steaming hot springs, and black deserts.
The country’s second most famous trail is the Fimmvörduháls hike, which can even be tackled in one or two days. The 15.5-miles (25-km) hike is of moderate difficulty and passes by a multitude of waterfalls. You’ll hike between three glaciers that lead to the scenic Thórsmörk valley.
If you are on the lookout for an easy trail, the Skógafoss Waterfall Trail is a good choice. The 10 miles (16km) hike takes only 4-6 hours to complete and is one of the most underrated experiences in the country. During this hike, you’ll have stunning views of waterfalls, dramatic canyons, and glacier-capped volcanoes.
To get the most out of your trip, plan your hiking vacation in Iceland in summer (June to August) when the weather is dry, warm, and least stormy.
